Reposted from @molecule_of_the_day (@get_regrann) - Propionic acid, also known as propanoic acid, is a colourless liquid with a pungent 🤢 odour resembling body odour. Industrially 🏭, propionic acid is produced by the catalytic hydrocarboxylation of ethylene gas. At low concentrations, this chemical inhibits the growth of mould and bacteria. Hence, most of the propionic acid produced is used as a preservative in animal 🐮🐷 feed and food 🥘 for human consumption. Another major application is as a preservative in baked goods like bread 🍞. Propionic acid is a crucial intermediate in the production of many other chemicals including pesticides 🐜🚫 and pharmaceuticals 💊💉. Useful plastics and polymers such as cellulose-acetate-propionate also require propionic acid. Thanks 🙏 anonymous for the suggestion! The molecular structure was created using ChemDoodle.
