Prose Protip #89
Tell us about your protagonist’s home. What is her room like? What are her prized possessions?
My lover and I are preparing to move. I made a drawing of the new apartment and wrote a list of things we already have, needs, and wishlist items for each room. It amazes me how many things go into even a small home.
If your story's setting is different from the one in which you live, this is also a great chance to flesh out the details of day-to-day life in a medieval hamlet/pirate ship/massive living space-whale-planet.
Prose Protip #67: On those days where you feel like not a single thing you write is any good, just write bad things. Think of it as clearing the way for the good stuff to come out.
This is especially good if you're writing a huge amount of material in a short time, i.e. anyone participating in #NaNoWriMo. Remember to write shitty first drafts: get it all out on the page first; edit later.
Prose Protip #64: Everyone is sympathetic from the right angle. Your job is to find that angle.
Prose Protip 63: Satire is armor against the absurdity of the world.
Prose Protip #62: Read stories about people as unlike you as possible. What are their wants and fears?
Prose Protip #61: Do the opposite of the last thing you did.
Collaborate with brilliant artists every chance you get.
Bonus protip: If you don't know any brilliant artists, the Internet can help you find makers not only throughout the world but in your area. Sites like Art Meetup are designed for precisely that reason.
(Remember to use caution when meeting anyone online, especially if you're a minor. Bring a friend if you can, and meet in a public place.)
