cw: police, protests, murder, violence, racism

hey y’all. in light of the police murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, and many many others, I wanted to boost actions you can take and places that are taking donations to protect Black communities and protestors. i’ve donated $20 and plan to donate more, please match me if you can.  i know this blog is a safe haven for many folks, so this will be my only post about it, but i also have so many followers that I couldn’t justify not speaking up.

actions: contact local politicians about police rehiring policies,

avoid posting or circulating photos of any protestors where their face can be seen. ask others to remove posts where this is the case. it is not enough to blur, the entire figure should be covered with an opaque box. do not edit using programs that save the original picture and screencap edited photos to remove the original metadata.

yes, cops hurt all oppressed people. yes, there are cops of color who commit murder. yes, there are white and non-black poc victims, and I mourn them too. however, the police are structurally designed to protect white supremacy: our police institutions are descended from slave patrols. cops of color who are unwilling to use force/murder are systematically pushed out of the force, often by denying backup so that they are more likely to die or quit. cops have been caught literally using photos of black people as target practice. while the police also protect other systems of oppression, it is clear that many of the incidents sparking these particular protests are based in white supremacy. i will not ignore that.

I try to only follow decent and reasonable people on Twitter. There are a lot of decent and reasonable people on Twitter, and many of them are doing good and important work. But for a large number of reasons, this is just not enough to make Twitter a remotely good place to be, especially during complicated and emotionally charged events.

There are some ways in which the Twittersphere is ahead of the curve, when it comes to discussing ongoing events. I acknowledge this, I appreciate this, I respect this.

But still, out of all the possible ways of trying to learn about the ongoing protests-- whether to attain philosophical insights on protest and police brutality, or to get a sense of the structure or dynamics of the communities and movements involved, or even to learn the most basic facts about what the protesters are or aren’t actually doing-- Twitter has got to be THE epistemically (and emotionally) worst possible way.

Absolutely, miserably, awful. Not recommended.

I just wanna make it clear that,

while I’ve been getting active and involved in outright protests, and hope to continue to do so, I know that’s not something everyone can do -- whether because of transportation, work, physical disability, neurodivergence, safety concerns, or any other reason

I’ve been talking a lot about my involvement and experiences with the protests, because it’s something that’s important to me and I’m excited about it, but I don’t look down on anyone who isn’t out protesting

there are a lot of meaningful things people can do that aren’t protesting, and moreover, people need to rest and take care of themselves, and that means different things for everybody

I know people need decompression spaces, and I'll try my best to be aware of & respect that
