hey y’all. in light of the police murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, and many many others, I wanted to boost actions you can take and places that are taking donations to protect Black communities and protestors. i’ve donated $20 and plan to donate more, please match me if you can.  i know this blog is a safe haven for many folks, so this will be my only post about it, but i also have so many followers that I couldn’t justify not speaking up.

actions: contact local politicians about police rehiring policies,

avoid posting or circulating photos of any protestors where their face can be seen. ask others to remove posts where this is the case. it is not enough to blur, the entire figure should be covered with an opaque box. do not edit using programs that save the original picture and screencap edited photos to remove the original metadata.

yes, cops hurt all oppressed people. yes, there are cops of color who commit murder. yes, there are white and non-black poc victims, and I mourn them too. however, the police are structurally designed to protect white supremacy: our police institutions are descended from slave patrols. cops of color who are unwilling to use force/murder are systematically pushed out of the force, often by denying backup so that they are more likely to die or quit. cops have been caught literally using photos of black people as target practice. while the police also protect other systems of oppression, it is clear that many of the incidents sparking these particular protests are based in white supremacy. i will not ignore that.

Why is it that if a trained, armed cop feels threatened (which I'm sure they genuinely do depending on the circumstances) they're allowed to "panic" and make a "split second decision" to shoot first and ask questions later...

But if an unarmed, untrained rando has cops yelling at them with weapons drawn, they're expected to keep a level head and comply?

‘Bait Truck’ Backlash: Cops Setting Up Poor Residents To Steal ‘Unacceptable,’ Leaders Say

A deaf man arrested in "Operation Trailer Trap" was looking for food on one of the "bait trucks," reports say.

In two videos, one reportedly filmed Thursday at 59th and Carpenter near the Dan Ryan Expy. and another filmed Friday at 56th and Ashland, activists allege Chicago Police officers are pulling over — and then abandoning —semi-trucks filled with merchandise in the under-resourced neighborhood as part of a government operation.

Keeping poor, largely Black, communities in horrific desperate conditions and then putting the kinds of resources you deny them in abandoned trucks and arresting people for trying to get them is just an overall inhuman and sadistic bit of capitalist, racist cruelty.

It is true that a lot of things cops see and experience are traumatic and not normal! And shouldn't be normal!

However!!! I would be a hell of a lot more sympathetic if you gave ANY indication of understanding that there are large swathes of people who share those experiences and for whom it is, horrifically, normal. You fucking work for them. And unlike you they don't get leave and go somewhere safe and relaxing at the end of the day. It's not a fucking job for them, they didn't get a choice, and they don't get paid for it at all, let alone as well as you do.

You fucking chose this.

And you have a platform and you could be talking about the impacts of trauma and the potential in community and the importance of preventative care and building resilience and cross-community solidarity and how seeing and supporting and listening to the most vulnerable members of our communities improves all our lives... but instead you wanna talk about how non-cops don't care enough about your feelings and can't imagine how hard you have it.
