My Mullvad VPN credits finally ran out, and–as promised–I switched to Proton VPN. I was right in assuming that getting Port Forwarding on macOS working (via Python3) would be a nightmare, but I did it anyway.
I got Proton VPN Plus on it's 70% off sale that they're currently running as a result of online censorship ramping up. I paid like $70 for TWO YEARS worth of access. This shit's poppin'. That's cheaper than Mullvad, and I get double the devices, an Apple TV app, automatic Port Forwarding for macOS before the end of the year, and Proton's servers don't cause the Reddit VPN-blocker pop-up.
And honestly? The Proton VPN app on Apple TV is more fun than I thought. 😭 If I'm gonna be advertised to on YouTube–no matter what–at the very least, the ads can be for products I cannot buy, in languages I cannot understand. 💀
10/10, so far. If you're looking for a VPN, and Proton is offering their $2.99/month, 2-year contract where you live, I'd say jump on it before they go back to their $5.99/month price. I think they also offer a $3.99 1-year contract, but idk. I just went with the 2-year one because it was so damn cheap.
i love it when i forget to turn off my vpn and find out about features that works differently on social medias
Proton has added an arbitration exclusivity clause
Together with the SLA change, we’re also making an update to our dispute resolution policy, including requiring individual arbitration for all disagreements (with certain outlined exceptions) and excluding class, representative, and collective claims.
I plan to be writing a strongly worded objection to this, and I’m disappointed that a pro-privacy (and implicity pro-consumer/end-user) company would resort to a tactic like this.
According to their terms, you can opt out but you have to specifically state as such and do so in writing to this address:
Proton AG Attn: Legal Route de la Galaise 32, 1228 Plan-les-Ouates Geneva, Switzerland
And you have to do so within 30 days of July 26, 2023.

Most people know by now that anytime they search for something in Google, the search is saved and used to serve them ads. What is less well known are the different tools that Google has at its disposal to vacuum up data: Gmail, Google Maps, Google Drive, Google Calendar, YouTube, and especially Chrome. While the fact that all these products collect user data may be an unpleasant surprise to many, Alphabet, Google’s parent company, is effectively an advertising company, with 83 percent of its revenue from ad placements in 2018.
In an effort to scrape even more targeted user data, last year Google began automatically logging users into Chrome when they logged in to Gmail. This is significant because Google can collect a much larger portion of data when you are logged in. While the easiest solution to avoid having Google sweep up all your data is to avoid using their products, that is not possible for everyone. You may own a Chromebook, which is only compatible with the Chrome browser. You might be locked into Google products through work, or maybe you simply value the user experience of having your email, online cloud storage, and calendar all linked together. For these users, there are some simple steps you can take that will improve your privacy and limit the amount of data that Google can collect.

So, for starters, you should use these tools:
qbittorrent or Transmission
ProtonVPN or Mullvad. Your choice! :) (there are others out there but these two generally come uniformly recommended by anyone who discusses which VPN provider to use that does not have a logging policy)
Mozilla Firefox with an ad blocker. I use uBlock Origin, but there are others.
Now, for some additional notes:
Ideally you'd want to have a separate computer to run all this on because while you can set up split tunnelling, it's easier to not have to. (And you don't need a super fast brand-new computer to do it all on, just one with lots of hard drive space available)
It's also worth enabling your kill switch. If you're super paranoid you can take one more step and bind your client to your VPN's "adapter" (e.g. https://www.ghacks.net/2016/03/23/qbittorrent-block-transfers-vpn-disconnect/ )
So how to administer your computer remotely? TightVNC has you covered. :)
What websites should you use? There's a very good set of links over on Reddit you can check out, so I'll leave you to do a simple Google search for that. :P
