Just a sketch. Honestly, I just wanted to do something about Nicole and Nicoleism
On a not so related note, I kinda like how she's such a asshole in the betrayal ending from FlipSide. I wonder if it's her true self or if she just had the idea of stepping on Jecka's dad and thought "I don't see why not"
so i just hit a follower milestone! (thank you all so much for the support you have given this blog) and as promised, here’s a tutorial detailing my entire process from beginning to end.
i will be covering everything from selecting scenes, cropping, resizing, sharpening and coloring. i hope i am able to explain this clearly enough but it is my first tutorial! feel free to shoot me an ask with any questions you might have.
things you will need:
- adobe photoshop cc
- quicktime player
- handbrake video converter (optional)
text and image heavy tutorial! very very long post below the cut!
this will be a very long, in depth tutorial detailing from start to finish how i make my gifs. so first, we start with opening our movie/show/whatever into quicktime player.
YOU WILL NEED IT IN MP4 FORMAT FOR THIS TO WORK IN QUICKTIME. THIS IS WHERE HANDBRAKE COMES IN. IF YOU ALREADY HAVE MP4, NO WORRIES. CONTINUE ON.
go to edit > trim
trim your clip to the desired scene
once you’ve found the scene you want, click trim then file > save (i usually save to my desktop but whatever works for you!)
now we open up our video we just saved in photoshop
file > import > import video frames to layers
you might need to cut down your scene more and heres where you do that (make sure to check the box that says limit every 2 frames otherwise you will get too many and your gif will be too large) click OK
select all of layers in the timeline AND in the layers panel
set the speed to 0.1 sec in your timeline
now you are going to hit the bar button (pictured below) above your timeline and hit Convert to Video Timeline
then right click on and convert your layers to smart object
next we’re going to begin resizing, cropping and sharpening our gif :)
image > image size > width: 270px
rid yourself of that pesky 1px border and go to image > canvas size
hit proceed after inputting these settings (your height doesn’t have to match mine but make sure to uncheck relative!)
now we sharpen!
filter > sharpen > smart sharpen. here are my settings:
ALRIGHT YOU’VE DONE IT! NOW THE REALLY FUN PART!!!! COLORING:
there are so many different types of coloring and processes you can use but we’re going with a basic lightening and vibrance tutorial. (if anyone is interested in a color porn, pale, b&w, etc tutorial let me know!)
sidenote:
these are specific settings for this particular scene and will likely need adjustments for lighter/darker scenes. remember that giffing takes practice and you only learn by trying!
first we’ll start with a brighten/contrast, levels and curves. these three tools will enable you to adjust your gif a great deal. this will be your base coloring from which you can start playing more with colors.
as you can see, the original gif is pretty dark so i want to use the brightness liberally here. BUT never go too big at once! YOU CAN ALWAYS BUILD ONTO IT.
BRIGHTNESS/CONTRAST:
CURVES:
LEVELS:
NEXT WE’RE GOING TO PLAY WITH THE VIBRANCE + SELECTIVE COLOR SOME BECAUSE IT’S LOOKING A LITTLE PALE AND WE WANT IT TO BE NICE AND COLORFUL <3
YOU’LL PROBABLY NOTICE THAT THE GIF IS LOOKING A LITTLE ORANGE NOW? SELECTIVE COLOR HERE WE COME. TONE DOWN SOME OF THE REDS/YELLOWS AS NEEDED:
I ALSO LIKE TO INCREASE THE BLACKS JUST A TINY BIT SO EVERYTHING LOOKS NICE AND SHARP:
THEN I SLAP ON ONE MORE BRIGHTNESS/CONTRAST LAYER FOR ANY MINOR ADJUSTMENTS BUT THIS IS COMPLETELY OPTIONAL:
NOW YOU HAVE A PRETTY GOOD GIF! THIS IS WHERE I LIKE TO GROUP THOSE LAYERS TOGETHER TO KEEP THINGS NICE AND ORDERLY.
SELECT THEM ALL IN THE LAYERS PANEL, RIGHT CLICK AND SELECT GROUP FROM LAYERS.
AT THIS POINT YOU COULD PROBABLY FINISH UP BUT WHY STOP THERE? LET’S PLAY WITH SOME OF THE COLORS IN YOUR GIF SOME MORE!!!
CASTIEL HAS SOME BLUE IN HIS TIE THAT I WANT TO BE A LITTLE BRIGHTER SO WE JUST USE SELECTIVE COLOR AGAIN:
DO THIS WITH ANY OF THE COLORS YOU WANT TO POP IN YOUR GIF.
JUST PLAY WITH IT SOME MORE UNTIL YOU LIKE IT. THAT’S REALLY ALL COLORING IS.
AND NOW YOU HAVE A COMPLETED GIF! CONGRATULATIONS! ADJUSTMENTS MAY NEED TO BE MADE IN ORDER TO SAVE FOR TUMBLR.
file > export > save for web (legacy)
make sure your gif is below 3MB otherwise it will not work.
and i’m good! it’s ready to go! go ahead and hit save and you’re done! congratulations on your new gif!

AFTER:
i hope i made this at least somewhat concise and easy to follow but again if anyone needs any help, i’m happy to answer any questions! <3
