“do you know exactly why we brought you in to the station?”
he has a good idea why, because it doesn’t take a genius to make the connection.
mathieu doesn’t say that, or anything, right away and instead takes the time to straighten his posture out in the horribly uncomfortable chair. he has nothing to hide, he thinks to himself as he shakes his head finally. except that he does. if he was a better person, maybe guilt would eat away at him more viciously. but he isn’t, so it doesn’t. not as much as he thinks it should anyway. when he speaks, his tone is nothing but respectful. “i don’t, unfortunately.”
“can you tell us exactly what went down the night of decemeber 31st 2018?”
mat feels himself tense at the mention of that night. still, he tries to keep a neutral face, something the officers questioning him raise a brow at. they didn’t expect him to break down crying, did they? regardless if manon is---was?---his sister, he’s not going to start bawling. “admittedly,” he begins, “there isn’t much to tell? i was with some friends and had a few drinks. that’s kind of it.” he finishes simply with a small shrug.
“were you at that party for a particular reason or too see anyone in particular?”
“it was my sister’s new years eve party. she throws--” mat abruptly stops, and genuine frown tugs at his lips as he corrects himself. “threw one every year at our family’s winter cabin... of course i went.” a pause while he shifts his position again slightly, feeling once more uncomfortable. this time it isn’t solely because of the chair. talking about manon has never been a favorite pastime of his, not while she was alive and certainly not now that she’s dead. “but i wanted to see my friends.”
he doesn’t say any more about it.
“what was your relationship to manon beaumont? did you get along with her? did you hang out with her often?”
alright, he thinks as it takes everything in his willpower to not roll his eyes, now things are getting redundant.
“as i previously said, she’s my sister.” it’s a vague starting response. they don’t appear satisfied, so he continues. “yes, we hung out... enough. being in different years and majors meant it wasn’t as frequent, but i guess that’s expected.”
“did you get along with her?” one of the officers asks him again, this time more pressing. far less patient. not to say they were exuding patience to begin with, however.
did he? the truth of whether or not mathieu got along with manon was complicated. he knows their relationship could’ve been better, and maybe it’s his fault for not reaching. but a childlike envy inevitably clawed at the edges of amicability. stupid and one-sided. just like that, mathieu spaces out for a moment. he mentally recalls a time where he was ten and he tricked manon into cutting her hair because she allegedly had gum stuck in it. then another when he was twelve, he made captain of the middle school track team, and his parents were too occupied with his darling sister to give him more than a lackluster congratulations.
for the love of everything, mathieu doesn’t want to admit it to himself, especially not while he’s being interrogated. but god, he was jealous. he was always jealous, even subconsciously.
“---mr. beaumont!” a cop hits their hand on the table. it’s a hollow and loud sound, and it effectively pulls him from his unanticipated stupor.
mat clears his throat. “my apologizes.” he soon continues as if nothing happened, vaguely cryptic as usual but seemingly enough to move on. “we got along as well as most siblings do.”
“is there anything suspicious you remember from that night? when did you see manon for the last time that night? was she alone or with someone?”
“nothing out of the ordinary,” he answers truthfully, because there really wasn’t anything he noticed that struck him as suspicious. “the beginning of the party was the last time i saw her. you know, kicking things off, welcoming people. that sort of thing. i don’t know what she was up to, or if she was with anyone, after that.”
the officers both glance towards each other, and the one sitting on the left hums, as if unconvinced. “so she throws this party every year, but you still don’t know what she could’ve been up to?”
perhaps his gaze turns into one of boredom for a split second, tired of all the questions and frankly wanting to leave, but mathieu fixes it as quick as possible. unfortunately, it doesn’t go unnoticed. he shrugs. “i guess a lot can change within a year, including what she does or doesn’t do at a party.”
“do you know anybody who would have wanted to hurt manon? is there anybody you can think of that was at odds with manon, maybe they disliked her or she wronged them?”
“no?” for once, it isn’t as steady as he wants it; instead it presents itself as a question in return, almost. like he isn’t sure. because, admittedly, he isn’t. excluding his own immature resentment, mathieu really doesn’t know if there was anyone who held stronger, more antagonistic feelings towards his little sister. guess he never thought about it. and now it makes him wonder---is there anyone in the group, in the stupid pact, that feels that way? if he was more susceptible to overflowing emotion, maybe he would begin feeling sick right about now. wait, does he feel a little sick?
no, that’s just the alcohol from much earlier in the night, he rationalizes, albeit poorly and awfully because the fact that they’re speaking about his sister is not lost.
the cops continue to watch him intently. “i mean, i don’t know. i find it hard to believe anyone could not like someone as lighthearted as her.” says the one who spent a lot of his childhood bouncing from hating and tolerating her.
“is there anything in your past that we should know about?”
of all the questions, this is one he least expects. him? his entire life, he thinks, has been orchestrated to be nothing short from perfect. perfect grades, above and beyond participation in scholastic and athletic pursuits. a respectful young man with a charming smile, even if he was more aloof than his peers. that’s how it’s always been. mathieu shakes his head slowly, a flicker of confusion flashes in his blue eyes; surely they could see he doesn’t have anything incriminating from the past. “no.”
“have you noticed anything suspicious since that night, maybe at school or when you’re with friends? has anybody been acting suspicious around you?”
“i don’t keep a lot of people around me to begin with, so no.” he admits to them with a weak smile, teetering on feigning sheepishness. it isn’t technically a lie, at least not fully, since mathieu really doesn’t keep a large group of people around. but he can tell they’re feeling more than exasperated with his continuous stream of ‘no’s. not that he particularly cares, they did haul him to the station without actual substance. they didn’t have anything besides an overall suspicion, did they? he could only hope.

- character development survey / questionnaire
describe your character in a few words.
eclectic, gregarious, fickle, imaginative, impulsive, loyal, bratty, attention seeking, loving
what do you know about your character that they don’t know yet?
They should be appreciating what they have now more. It isn’t going to last forever.
what are your character’s major flaws?
Sidney seeks attention, even negative attention. They often act out, occasionally just as the typical class clown, but they can take things too far. Especially on someone else’s behalf, and were something of a bully in highschool. Sidney is also deeply irresponsible, and always wants to take the easy way out.
what is your character’s greatest asset?
While their personality isn’t always to everyone’s taste, they have an affable and playful energy and it draws them a certain amount of fond affection and leeway, even from relative strangers. They’re also think quickly on their feet, and are a good judge of character, meaning they can often talk themselves out of situations that might have otherwise been much worse.
