the author goes on a long research binge about fetal alcohol syndrome based on something a (then-pregnant) friend of hers once said in passing

Yeah, yeah, you're not wrong, of course I do. Stand (I use the word understand so much it turns out): It will stand as one of the more surreal moments of Ezra’s life, sitting on a low couch across from his CO while a tiny orange kitten gnawed on his hair and a larger black one attempted to climb the back of her jacket.

Trust: He notices the girl who clambers her way over the fence and into the pasture with the packles, his situational awareness as a kid was excellent by necessity and it had only gotten better during his and Thrawn’s four-year-long trust building excersise.

This is going to make me sound like an absolute nerd, but my family had POTO on tape and since it was that or Beethoven, I listened to a lot of POTO as a kid. IIRC my fave was “Masquerade”. Extremely surprising I’m not a musical theatre kid given all that!
