9) How does your OC handle their physical health? Do they take care of themselves?
She’s… OKAY about it. She’s alive. She’s kind of bony toward the extremities and not particularly toned. Doesn’t take care of her skin very well. A bit sundamaged, NEVER moisturized, very dry skin. Visible creases on her inner elbows, forehead, and below her eyes. She eats enough and eats from fresh ingredients when she can go out and about for them. She’s probably lacking some mineral.
Oh yeah there’s the drugs. She takes uppers and occasionally downers, exclusively orally or nasally. She’s decimal-point careful with the doses/timing/use location of everything except alcohol, for which she’ll sometimes (rarely) go blackout drunk in her home as a form of relief-based self harm.
When she calculates she’s developing a tolerance toward something, she takes a semiosoberer, a medical-grade semiotic agent, or scalpel, that rids the body of a chemical addiction. Semiosoberers aren’t cheap and widespread yet in the time that Noumena lives, but she acquires them at a discount through her job connections. She’s taken tens of thousands of dollars worth of soberers by now. They do their job only for her to return to drugs for emotional/practical reasons.
10) How does your OC handle their mental health? Do they take care of themselves?
Noumena is AWARE of mental health as something a person should take care of, but the way she approaches it is devoid of care for what emotion she actually feels. Like, she KNOWS a person probably needs to spend time in sunlight and company and art, so she’ll plan for and follow through on doing that. But not once is she paying serious attention to how she feels. It’s maintenance to her. Her emotions are something to monitor, tend, and train, not be.
I think her one exception is food. She knows how to cook flavorful and inexpensive meals for herself (and later Psychesoma). She does it because it tastes better than not making it flavorful. She readily could and has lived without it, but she actively chooses to feed herself food she enjoys because she can and it’s nice. If she had to rationalize it, she’d consider it a bonus toward her mental fortitude that she can regularly afford to make.
Noumena does not know how to mourn someone she genuinely cares about. She’s mourned before: family, friends, strangers. At strangely similar, muted degrees. She does not dwell long, doesn’t cry, it doesn’t overtake her thoughts. PS changes things. When the bombing takes them violently and suddenly, Noumena sets off for the flattened part of the city to look for them. She finds their body caked in dust underneath a skyscraper’s rubble, cleans them off the best she can, and considers taking them home. She eventually buries them herself, but their body spiritually sits behind her every where she goes. She takes her life about a year later by intentional negligence.
