How CPAP Helps in Pulmonary Edema?
Pulmonary edema is a condition characterized by fluid accumulation in the lungs, which hinders breathing. A common treatment for this is Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy. CPAP is used mainly as a treatment for obstructive sleep apnea but can also be beneficial in pulmonary edema by improving lung function and oxygen levels.
CPAP achieves this by providing a steady stream of air to keep the airways open which does a number of things:
Enhances oxygenation: CPAP helps to keep the lungs were open and and thus to allow an adequate exchange of oxygen.
Relieves Breathlessness: The pressure makes it easier to breathe, which can help patients with shortness of breath.
Lessens Fluid accumulation: CPAP helps transport fluid from the lungs to the blood vessels, thus prevents fluid accumulation.
In some of the worse cases of pulmonary edema, CPAP will be able to avoid invasive ventilation and thus provides another valuable weapon in a life threatening condition.
