Story - summarized

Serena and Helz return to her hometown after finishing the fashion show in Wintermount. Her little brother, Mok, is happy to see her, but not Helz. News of the two's relationship had already reached the little Pigeon town, and Mok doesn't want anyone stealing his big sister away.

At the house, Serena finds her old scrapbook, filled with photos and notes of her teen years. In it is a design sketch for a goose-down dress, similar to the one she wore at the Wintermount fashion show. She still regrets not having worn this version of it, though, and not in her hometown.

Helz has a great idea. He recruits Mok to help bring Serena's model dream to life. The two boys gather materials to make the Pigeon-hometown version of the dress, and Serena adjusts the design. She remembers working so hard as a teen to become a model, and she almost gave up. But she had the support of her mom and brother, and now, she has Helz, too.

Once the dress is finished, Serena shows it off for her loved ones. Helz admits after the impromptu show that he wishes he could have given her a dress like this when they first met. She assures him that she loves all his work and values all his support.

Before they return to Apple for work, Mok finally accepts Helz into the family and even invites him back. Serena knows that her two boys will always have her back no matter what.

Connections

-The first time Helz and Serena met was at Goya's studio in Morning Breeze. Helz was an intern and Serena was a model, but both of them left due to poor treatment.

-Helz met Serena's family back in Poetry By The Wind. He knew how much she valued her hometown and family, so he designed a suit for her, to help her remember her roots as she pursued her dreams.

-We actually meet Mok early on, back in Loen's memories for Glittering Date. He wanted to join Loen on adventures, but then got homesick. Loen dropped him off in Lodden at his sister's place.

-This may be the first suit to utilize goose feathers in the design, but it's not the first Reflection to have something to do with geese. Yeeso takes care of a goose named Miss Raphael in Goose's Melody and helps her find the right song to listen to while laying eggs.

Fun Facts

-During the event, Nikki and friends thought Helz was going to propose to Serena with a ring. They were all surprised when he asked her out with a key to his store.

-In the Index, under the last section for the "Profile" page, Thoughts in the Scrapbook, Serena reveals that her scrapbook contains more than just fashion designs and model dreams; she also wrote about her future lover, what he could be like.

-Despite the event taking place in Wintermount, this suit is cataloged under Apple suits.

Envoy of Sexy: Caprico

The first time we meet Caprico, he's rough around the edges and lonely. But he starts regaining his memories during the third anniversary (Void Starlight), and we help him uncover the truth at Mount Koso: he is one of the long-lost Envoys!

His Attribute is Sexy, and is represented by the color purple. His style is most represented by Ruins and North.

You may think of sexiness as inherently risqué, but there's more to this Attribute than low necklines or dress slits. The one thing Caprico always craves is perfection and exploration, to better himself. He has an unquenchable passion that drives him to innovate, and he won't stop until he has surpassed his limits. Similarly, Lilith is always striving to be the most beautiful in the world, whether that's wearing the latest fashion to focus on outer beauty, or re-characterizing herself as kind and attentive to her subjects to emphasize inner beauty. One thing is for sure: Caprico will always go above and beyond in all he does!

Deep in the Ninir forest lies Nephiliet, a humanoid spider girl who will hunt anything and everything that gets caught in her web. Even other spiders are prey to her. She doesn't know any other life than "hunt or be hunted."

Soon, she spots humans in a greenhouse not too far away. Nephiliet tries to trap one of them, but is repulsed by their stench. Still, it's rare to see so many humans here, so she watches them every day. And then, Nephiliet finds out what they were doing: conducting an experiment on a humanoid butterfly. If this many humans swarm around the butterfly and draw its blood for "research," then surely it must be the best-tasting prey, right?

Nephiliet sneaks in one night and steals the butterfly, still in its strange pod. But she quickly learns this is no ordinary butterfly. It calls itself Evangelos, shows concern for her well-being, and enjoys decorating the web. But it drains itself quickly and needs to rest on the web often.

The humans are outraged that they lost their experiment, so they find a way to repel all creatures from the spiderweb. Except when Nephiliet finds out, she sets up a trap for insects to swarm the humans there. She returns home triumphant - Evangelos is hurt and dying.

She weaves her spider silk into a cocoon for it. Evangelos fully recovers, but now Nephiliet is weak. She spun a lot of silk in such a short time. If they continue with this method, both of them will die soon. Nephiliet returns to the greenhouse, desperate to find something to save Evangelos. Instead, she finds a wedding picture. She realizes she's in love with Evangelos, and she wants to spend the rest of her life with it.

Connections

-This is the third wedding event in Shining Nikki. First was the wedding dress contest in Wintermount. Then came the Halloween-themed Dreamy Reflection with the ghost and the witch.

-Evangelos may be the first nonbinary character confirmed in-story, but it's not the first nonbinary character in the game. Most of the gods, like Arionus, Hephaes, and the God of Styling, all go by "They" and are assumed to be either genderless or all-gendered, despite having a gendered voice actor.

-Other characters in Miraland have been subjected to torturous experiments, too: Joy in Perfect Experiment, Ashley in Vol. 2, Ch. 10, and even Nikki in Vol. 1, Ch. 8 when she tries to find Joy in the abandoned lab.

Fun Facts

-The Awakened art for Nephiliet's and Evangelos' Reflections are the same moment, but from different angles. Nephiliet's art shows her draping the veil on both of them and gently cupping Evangelos' face.

-The experiments in the greenhouse were actually illegal and unethical, and it seems Evangelos is the only surviving test subject.

Hester and some other captives are thrown into an arena, where a hungry lion will hunt them down and eat them. By order of the tyrannic king Cesar, if any of the captives manages to slay the lion, they would be pardoned.

Wasting no time, Hester gets close and plunges a dagger into the lion. Only Cesar finds this amusing. He declares her his bride and moves her into his palace. She wants for nothing, but now she needs to figure out how to kill Cesar, as she is actually an envoy for the god Bastet. When Cesar conquered the Lost Sand Tribe, he destroyed anything relating to Bastet. His divine punishment would be death.

But as Hester gets closer to Cesar, she recognizes that his ideas aren't bad, per se, but they're extreme, working the citizens and slaves to death. He is much like Bastet or any other god: they all see humans as servants, just means to an end.

Cesar sees himself as above gods, not needing any of their divine permission or care. To him, gods are just fairy tales made up by people who can't handle reality.

Hester remembers that she is here to kill Cesar on behalf of Bastet, not fall for him. So, she makes efforts to help the people of Tumenis, providing food and jobs, undermining Cesar's power in the kingdom. As the queen, Hester needs to shift the balance of power before she can kill the lion-hearted king.

Connections

-Hester calls herself the princess of the Lost Sand Tribe. The Lost Sand Tribe was one of the three tribes that partook in the Hawk Hunting event in Vol. 2, Ch. 7, and it's also the tribe that the little girl Lygia belonged to during the Starsand Whispers event.

-According to Hester's other Reflection, Late-Night Tricks, Cesar was blessed with good health and a strong body by Bastet. Without her power, he would've died of childhood sickness and lost in several battles. So him destroying her temple is especially offensive.

Fun Facts

-Cesar is most likely based off the first Roman emperor Julius Caesar. He married the Egyptian queen Cleopatra as a power grab: her wealth would help him maintain power in Rome. And everything Caesar did was to push his influence and garner more power for himself.

-Whenever Cesar conquers a new land or tribe, he is quick to destroy their religious statues and places of worship. This was something else the Roman Empire did: if they could not incorporate local deities into their own pantheon (or they just didn't like it), they would quash that deity or ritual out of existence.

-Bastet is an Egyptian god with a cat or lion head. She presides over the sun, moon, fertility, home, protection, and the Eye of Ra. Bastet was known as both a motherly figure and a fierce avenger.

Rumors are circulating about Mercury and his black cat. The "President Elf" keeps his cards close to his chest, but recently, a rival group, Rockefeller, has blackmailed the Mercury Group with some old, but specific, intel about Mercury smuggling cat food.

Besides Mercury, only one other creature would dare go near that section of the study: the black cat. Mercury is suspicious, but he leaves the cat alone. Once he steps out of the room, the black cat shape-shifts into a young man.

The Black Cat Boy is the best spy in Lodden, and Rockefeller hired him to dig up dirt on Mercury that they could use against him in negotiations. The boy splits his time between cuddling with Mercury and delivering intel.

Vulture, Mercury's closest agent, notices the odd behavior, and tries to catch the cat in the act. But the boy figures out he's being watched, so he has to be careful in future missions.

This was only the first chapter of Peppermint's new project: a fanfiction based after a mysterious incident regarding the past owner of New Wing Island before Mercury bought him out.

Connections

-Mercury actually did have a black cat. You can see it in Vol. 1 Ch. 6, when Nikki has visions of Mercury and the cat in his office.

-Peppermint makes herself a pumpkin latte at the end of the Reflection. When the Casual Drinks section of the workshop opened, Peppermint was the first one, meeting an online friend at a café to try a pumpkin latte (per Ai's recommendation).

-Peppermint mentions that the Rockefeller group is fictional, but based after an incident that happened at a Mercury dinner. This is when Mercury himself killed Winslet, a rival who owned New Wing Island.

Fun Facts

-Rockefeller was the name of an American oil tycoon who revolutionized the petroleum industry, and also eliminated his competitors by sabotaging their businesses.

-A common saying in English goes "Curiosity killed the cat," but this is actually half of the original expression. The full version goes, "Curiosity killed the cat, but satisfaction brought it back." It encourages exploring and discovering new things rather than avoiding them.

-Peppermint is most famous for her "Suicide Seal" manga, and she has a Little Seal pillow based on the character from the manga.

Ideal City is done. Nikki convinced Glow to stop the project. Caprico finishes up at his lab, but something strange happened during the New World α project.

He had memories of an unfamiliar place, with unfamiliar people.

Before he leaves Ruins, Caprico assists Hestia with one last experiment dealing with consciousness. Right then, he realizes that machine may not be as perfect as he originally thought. This whole time he wanted to lose his humanity and become one with machine.

But do the answers he seeks lie in his humanity?

Glow offers to help him one last time, showing him how to interact with the Ocean of Memories. She figured out that while she can see and study the Ocean, she can't touch or control it, and she can't reach the gods on the other side. If something happened to Caprico's memories, it must have happened there.

He enters the simulation, and Glow pinpoints where his "memories" are from: Mount Koso in North Kingdom.

Caprico says goodbye to Glow and Hestia, and then he prepares for his journey to North. Whoever he is, whatever these strange memories are, he is determined to find the answers.

Connections

-Caprico finds Hestia working on a project with bionics, and she's helping one called Explor-39. We follow this bionic in his "life" as he navigates implanted memories of Hestia as his wife in the event Code: Ai.

-This isn't the first time that a Reflection takes place in a location different from the one it's Indexed in. Caprico's memories take place in Ruins, but the suit and Reflection belong to North Kingdom, which is where he encounters you and Nikki as well as his lost memories. Similarly, Lilith's Reflection and suit for Void of Desire belong to the Ruins category, but her memories all take place in Ninir.

-For as long as he can remember, Caprico always believed machine was the pinnacle of perfection and the ultimate goal for humanity. Back in Into the Ruins, he started turning himself into a cyborg at Glow's suggestion, to start on the path toward his perfection. But since he produced an impurity crystal in Ideal City during the Void Stardust anniversary hell, he's wondered about his own humanity. And now, with him boarding the craft to go to North, he's starting to embrace what it means to be human.

Fun Facts

-The Attribute of Sexy is about seeking perfection and pushing for new discoveries. Everything Caprico has done, in all his Reflections and in the Story Chapters, is all for this pursuit. And ultimately, at the end of Vol. 2, Ch. 12, he realizes he is the lost Envoy of Sexy.

-In the Story Chapter, Caprico remembers his original name: Capri. He most likely got the name "Caprico" after he began his synthetic transformation and got the goat helmet, which makes sense because "Caprico" comes from "Capricorn," the Zodiac sign of the half-goat, half fish.

-Caprico dies in the last Challenge Stage for Vol. 2, Ch. 12. He was caught in the middle of a war and avalanche, and he hears the old god of war and blood mocking him, condemning him to "awake once more" and to treat humankind as disposable tools.

The soldiers of Squad Seven are burnt out from the extra training, and morale is running low, but Mingzhao wants to continue. Desperate, the soldiers reach out to Yunyan, hoping he could persuade his cousin to ease up, or at least let the soldiers have some fun.

Mingzhao insists that no one under her command shall be lazy... but Yunyan's plea gives her an idea. She offers a contest with her soldiers: whoever can beat her at horseback archery, shall earn a day off from training. No one wants to compete against her, since she is one of the fiercest soldiers in Cloud Empire, and already a general at a young age.

Still, one man steps forth to try. In a few minutes, he's already gained a good lead. Mingzhao watches his technique, pointing out where he's strong (like his speed) and where he needs improvement (observing his surroundings). Soon, all the soldiers join. No one has beaten Mingzhao's score, but they feel more determined than before.

One day, some members of the Cangwu gang cause trouble nearby. Mingzhao leads her squad to the northern mountains, where they surround the gang and ambush them. Some soldiers launch arrows while on horseback, and others engage in combat on the ground. In no time, the squad defeats the gang.

Morale is high among the soldiers. From now on, they'll follow Mingzhao's strict training regimen.

Connections

-We first hear of Cangwu in Vol. 2, where they team up with Mercury Group to change the moon and bring the Water Elves to Pigeon.

-Also, during the Everdream Trap hell event for Chinese New Year, the main leader of the Cangwu group finally appears, Jiang Yuan. She used to be a saintess who was forced to use her own blood to power the priest's arrays, and now, she runs one of the biggest criminal gangs in Miraland.

-Empress Mingyi is an impressive general in Glorious Throne, and even in times of peace, she strategizes how best to help the people, even when royal cousins get upset with her. It's no wonder that her descendant Mingzhao is strong-willed and clever.

Fun Facts

-This is the first (and only so far) suit to feature a bow and arrow.

-Mingzhao talks about her training regimen in the Index. She's strict with her soldiers because she doesn't want any of them to die on the battlefield. But when rumors spread about her starting a night training as well, she's quick to shut those down, declaring she's "not that cruel."

A data hacker named G owes Caprico lots of money. So, when G gets an advertisement from Mercury Group to be a test subject in Ruins, he jumps at the opportunity to make some cash. He'll attend this experiment, then walk away with top secret knowledge he can sell on the black market.

But when he arrives, something is off. Everyone, who was so excited to be here, falls into an eerie calm, and they're ushered into capsules to sleep and be tested on. G manages to avoid the capsule and makes his way deeper into Ruins. He comes across Glow, who is monitoring the whole experiment... and now has caught G.

Caprico is tinkering in his workshop when he gets an email from Glow. Out of the blue, she is inviting him to Ruins to help with an experiment. Of course, Caprico can't resist, and he agrees to help her. Upon arriving at the main Ruin Island, he goes straight to work, entering a capsule willingly and transporting himself to the virtual world of Ideal City.

His role is to perfect society and weed out impurities, like sudden emotions. As he gets to work, he notices a man in the distance running from virtual police. The man is shot and arrested.

Meanwhile, back in the real world, G the hacker barely wakes up from his "dream" of being shot. Caprico doesn't reach out or try to help him, leaving him behind in his quest for mechanical perfection.

Connections

-Glow calls Caprico Code-219. He first met her in his Reflection for Into the Ruins, where he used to be a scientist at Ruins, and his new "name" was taken from his IQ being 219.

-Caprico prides himself on not needing emotions and being more rational than others - however, in one of the hell event's side stories, Heart of Machines, he produces many impurity crystals when he is proud and happy of his experiments.

-In the extra dialogues in the Index section, for both Caprico's and Glow's Reflections for the event, they comment that Caprico is not like other humans. After this event, in the next story chapter, Caprico discovers he is one of the Envoys of the God of Styling.

-This Reflection marks Caprico's second time in Ruins.
