It's been a long night... last night I saw Purple Tinker making some posts when I checked Twitter (I'm kinda sporadic in my Twitter use, but the past week I've been checking it almost once a day) and decided to say something nice. She seems like a lovely lady and it makes me really sad to see what she goes through. I occasionally see some aggression on her part that seems over the top or slightly unnecessary, and I think that gives many people an excuse to turn their backs on her, but she deals with such overwhelming and persistent abuse that I can hardly blame her. At least she has the courage to stand up for herself and others, regardless of how people choose to judge the efficacy of her words and actions. I wish I knew how to cheer her up. I felt foolish and perhaps a little invasive and hamfisted, but I tried.
"Hey, @prpltnkr... I'm sorry people suck. You're #Tenouttaten! #WouldHug"
I felt even more foolish when she thanked me. I don't know her. I'm just some guy with a pony twitter who randomly threw out some compliments. Was it weird and creepy of me? Did she really appreciate it? Was she just being polite? Why do I care so much?
That last question is something my wife asked me when I admitted being upset by the way Purple Tinker was treated on some trash tv show hosted by Bravo...
Is it because she reminds me of trans people important in my life? Is it because I relate to the pain felt by trans people in some way, despite being fortunately free of the cruelty they suffer? Is it because of my own issues with gender identity and body dysphoria?
I'd like to think it's because I have a heart, and that's all it takes...
It's strange how sometimes something can get in your head, and it just won't get out. Even when you don't realize it's still there. I listened intently to a Michael Crichton audiobook on the job, but as soon as I got home I found myself worrying about Purple Tinker and wishing she could escape the bullshit and have a nice day. She deserves that just like anybody else.
She had posted some cool stuff while I was at work. She linked to a Transgender Misconceptions article that made me cry. Brought up some tough memories.
I also saw a tweet she retweeted, which mentioned Max Veers. So I went ahead and looked that up. What a crazy situation that was. I'm not gonna judge the guy as guilty or innocent, but it's worth noting that his statements were horrifying enough on their own. Made me really sad.
Since I'm a voiceless body of text attached to a pony for the majority of people out there, I suppose I'll point out that I'm not transgender. I'm very feminine, but the thing about my body that bothers me the most has no sexual function and I have no intention of changing my physical gender.
Someone very important in my life was pre-op trans. We lost touch a year ago. She (I'm using her birth gender under the circumstances) decided to give up transitioning so that she could go back to her abusive ex-boyfriend. An 11 year friendship ended with a lie, and I'm worried about her.
I decided that I hadn't been on Tumblr in FOREVER, and I occasionally read Purple Tinker's tumblr posts when she links to them on Twitter, so I decided to follow her. Searching Tumblr didn't find her account, it found "Shit Purple Tinker Says". Curious, I decided to give it a look.
(When I did find her Tumblr, I realized I was already following. I just didn't know cause I never log into Tumblr.)
It seemed odd that her statements were totally fine. I'm not sure how the moderator of that account found any of the examples offensive. I like Purple Tinker and they found some of the least offensive things she's ever said to complain about. WTF?
Oh my gracious... you mean... Purple Tinker responded to an aggressive DeviantArt commentator by pointing out that person's hypocrisy in a concise and revealing way?! Seriously? How is that bothersome? The moderator's comment made it clear that they thought the DeviantArtist who attacked Purple Tinker had a "friendly" tone... It wasn't friendly at all! Do we speak the same language?! ugh...
This led me to a song called "Something Broke" by Tarby. There was an ongoing argument between Purple Tinker and some other folks about this song and its content. Even though I could tell by the discussion that the song would bother me, I felt it wasn't right to read the argument without checking what they were arguing about. The lyrics of that song made me feel sick inside.
Now, I will point out that I have a personal philosophy against censorship. I think the song has a right to exist, and now that it does I think it is important that it remain available for the purpose of discourse. To hide or destroy such a work is to cover up the flaws in our society rather than addressing them.
That being said... it's something to be addressed, and it made me physically ill. What was the writer's intention with this work? How does relating this topic to My Little Pony, and therefore making it infinitely more visible to children, benefit that intention? What was the inspiration behind this? These are all important questions to ask.
I'm worried that there might be too many people just happy to have some MLP material they consider "mature". I use "mature" in quotations because this kind of material is probably as far from mature as you can get. As far as I can tell, the song seems to be offensive for the sake of being offensive. And I can't blame the pony community for the existence of this kind of thing, because I see it all over the place.
Someday, our culture is going to have to outgrow this behavior. To escape this mindset. Being offensive without purpose is a childish way of tricking other children into thinking you're significant when you are not. Kindness is significant. Truth is significant. Using child abuse as a hook to get people to pay attention to your crappy music is pathetic.
As a disclaimer, I will admit that the previous comment only applies to Tarby if I'm right about his song having no artistic intentions. I could be wrong. Though I doubt it.
So yeah... sometimes things get stuck in my head, and I thought it would be healthy to let it out. So here we are with an insanely long post.
In summary: Purple Tinker is awesome! Equality is awesome! Cruel/abusive people make me sad.
Now, maybe I can enjoy last night's Daily Show. I've had it paused for the past hour and a half.
