My letter to Disney
To whom it may concern, To start, I would like to state that I am a long time supporter of Disney television. While I cannot claim that I am a fan of everything you produce, some of my favorite children's programs (such as Kim Possible) have come from your channel. I am a Disney Channel fan. I respect the network. I feel comfortable allowing children to watch your programming. It has come to my attention that your network intends to portray a lesbian couple on your show, Good Luck Charlie. It has also come to my attention that there is a campaign to discourage this decision; to intimidate you into thinking that the majority of your viewers are opposed to such content in your programming. I believe that our children's welfare should be your priority, not activists. I believe that love and acceptance is a positive message for children. I believe that love is normal. I believe there is no difference between same sex couples and heterosexual couples. I believe that to teach our children anything different is harmful to them. It is my belief that Disney Channel does not teach hate or exclusion in its programming. I believe that portraying a same sex couple the same way you portray heterosexual couples would have absolutely no change in how Disney currently does business. I believe that anyone who says different, anyone who will "choose not to trust Disney Channel if you proceed with these plans", fails to understand the innocence of a child. Showing that people are the same, showing love and acceptance, does not disrespect a child's innocence. Having LGBT characters in your shows is not progressive activism, it is a healthy acceptance of reality and the people who share our world. I trust your network. I trust you to do the right thing. If you decide to cave into the pressure exerted by this campaign, I will understand. There are a lot of people in this world who are blinded by the hate they have been taught, and who insist their children be taught the same hate. And a lot of those people watch your network. I will understand. However, I think you're better than that. For the record, I am a married heterosexual trying for a first child. I support Disney Channel regardless of your decision in this matter, but I consider the decision to include a lesbian couple to be a healthy message for children. Sincerely, [My name]
