It was September 2013 and I just got laid off from my job. I had been working at a small company in New York that distributed high-end sunglasses (random, I know) for a little less than a year. Even though I had lost my job, I wasn’t all that upset about it because the longer I stayed there, the more unfulfilled I felt.
But then, The Pushcart Players came along...
After majoring in English in college, I was unsure what I wanted to do as a career. I worked in restaurants and temp jobs etc until Ruth Fost offered me a position as a Stage Manager for their brand new show “Celebrating New Jersey!” It was a two-person educational musical starring Harry Patrick Christian and Phebe Taylor about the 250th anniversary of New Jersey becoming a colony.
As Stage Managers for The Pushcart Players, our job is to travel to and from schools and professional theatre venues and setting up and operating lighting and audio equipment during performances. Additionally, we serve as liaisons to each location’s administration, welcoming faculty and and students to the performance space. We help ensure that performances run smoothly for both actors and audiences, trouble-shooting to accommodate each space’s particular technical requirements.
I had zero experience in any of this stuff and it definitely took me a while to get the hang of it...and let’s be honest, I’m still learning six years later. However, I can safely say it has been the best job of my life and has taught me a great deal.
As of 2019, in addition to remaining a Stage Manager here, I am now the Social Media Manager for Pushcart. I will be remaining active on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and obviously Tumblr in order to engage with fans of The Pushcart Players while promoting our business in a fun and effective manner.
Well, that’s enough about me...just wanted to let everyone in on my background and what to look out for in coming year! Thanks for reading and stay tuned!
