To celebrate Kurentovanje I thought I'd draw Habit dressed as a Kurent and Li Lee tying her handkerchief around his bell belt since he's her favourite >w< The mask usually comes with a long tongue attached at the bottom but Habit has that part covered

Today begins the Slovenian carnival called Pust!

Pust is a Slovenian (and Slavic in general) pagan holiday that goes way back. It was later adopted by the Romans too, I guess they thought it was neat. When Christians conquered our land they at first wanted to ban Pust, but gave up trying after the 10th century. As a nation, we never really cared much what Christians think lol. It’s still alive today.

The most well-known carnival mask is kurent, a costume made of fur, feathers, and large cowbells. Their purpose is to drive away Winter so Spring can return to the land.

Pust doesn’t happen on the same date each year, but the two holy days always land on Saturday and Tuesday. In 2018 Pust is on 10th and 13th of February. In city Ptuj the carnival lasts more than a week and becomes a huge party with lots of local and foreign tourists.
