I genuinely don’t get why some people assume “gringo” is some kind of racial insult aimed at non-white Americans specifically. Where I’m from, it just means someone from the U.S. — any color, any background. It’s about nationality, not race.
This whole conversation popped up again because of the Super Bowl halftime show — Bad Bunny headlined it this year, which is kind of a big deal culturally since he’s a Spanish-language Latino artist performing on one of the most U.S.-centric stages. And as usual, a lot of the discourse online got weird fast.
Like… I get the history argument some people bring up. But that doesn’t change how the word is actually used in Latin America. It’s not meant to erase anyone’s past — it’s just shorthand for “person from the U.S.”
