The Codex Silenda, designed by Brady Whitney, is a book that requires you to solve an actual physical mechanical puzzle to access each successive page.
Think it’s cool? Want to own one yourself? You’re not alone! So many people expressed interest in the Codex Silenda that a Kickstarter was created for the “Codex Silenda Remastered”
As of today - March 22nd, 2020 - the Kickstarter is just 5 days away from closing, so if you want to secure a copy of this amazing 5-page book for yourself you have only 5 days left to ensure you get one!
Thus far, the kickstarter campaign has been a massive success, leading to the creation of special editions. There are now 5 possible stories to choose from: the original story, about an apprentice of Leonardo DaVinci, plus 4 new stories which were written by Michael Buonagurio. The different stories come with different cover engravings to complement their theme:
From left to right are the different engravings for the 5 themes: Da Vinci, Mayan, Viking, Egyptian, and Necronomicon. You can choose any of the 5 accent colors (yellow, red, green, blue, or black) and either the light or dark wood stain to be applied to the engravings shown for whichever story you choose (i.e. The Da Vinci doesn’t need to be yellow, you can get the Necronomicon with darker wood, etc.) AND, if you want to get REALLY fancy (and shell out mucho extra dinero) you can even get gold leaf, silver leaf, or copper leaf applied to specially distressed and aged wood stained with your choice of any combination of 5 stains as the major and minor stains (The cheaper option only lets you choose between light or dark stain, which is REALLY a choice of predominantly-light-with-some-smaller-dark-pieces or predominantly-dark-with-some-smaller-light-pieces - you can’t choose entirely-light-where-the-large-and-small-pieces-match or entirely-dark. With the expensive staining options you can! (though that is not shown in any of the examples)) The 5 stain options are Cherry, Ebony, Birch, Golden Oak, and Walnut.
Cool? Heck yeah!
Oh, and for a bonus picture, here’s what the 5 puzzles look like (all the different books have the same 5 puzzles):
The first puzzle, shown in the upper left, is the cover of the original-style book, without the themed engravings. While engravings and gold leaf and such may be added, the mechanical workings of the puzzle remain the same. The same is true of the other puzzles. Depending on your color choices, they may look a little different (and depending on your choice of story, the text engraved on the reverse of each puzzle-block-page will obviously be different) but they all function with the same pieces
But wait a sec, you might be saying. I don’t see some of the puzzles from the gif that is the very image of this post shown here!!!! Well, that is because they went kinda crazy when their kickstarter got so popular and they developed a super-extra-expensive 7-page version. Here are all the puzzles from the 7-page version:
So yeah... cool stuff. The puzzles are supposed to get progressively more difficult too, so I’d be afraid to start reading, get really into the story (although, with it being only a few pages long there isn’t much risk of getting REALLY into it I guess), and then be unable to figure out how to unlock the page with the ending!
