EVERYTHING IS QUIET AND SHE IS SAFE
“i hold her to me tightly - i hold her onto me tighter - i hold her onto me tighter until i feel her bones crack against me and the chattering stop.”
[the sound of hilary’s panicked, pained chattering rise as so does her cracking bones, crushing under fleabag’s grip like crumpled paper in her deadly hold, cutting the guinea pig’s squeaks short. the audience - the friends - gasps at the death of hillary the guinea pig. the silence is dead, cold with only the sudden chills along everyone’s skin and there is no sign of movement. the last remaining memory of boo’s life now gone. only regret of the past is thick in the air and through the recording.]
“everything is quiet...”
[she is given her silence and there no sound as she looks outward. she has given boo what she had wanted, what hillary wanted, in the end. boo and hilary, reunited and happy together and leaving her behind in the silence. alone. in the dark. with the friends that are always there. always.]
“...and she is safe.”
[she gives a look after that. a look that almost says ‘i’m fine’ and yet clearly she isn’t. she’s alone and ‘she is safe’ gives us that her view of safe is being a memory as well as hillary being reunited with boo the same way. crushed by something they could not have predicted.]

“hillary’s teeth are going again, crashing against each other. the noise is unbearable - it’s relentless, relentless chattering. they do that when they’re in pain or distressed or -- i can’t listen to it.
i take her out of her hutch. i hold her little body to my naked chest. i can feel her claws. her bones feel bent and her breathing is shallow but, her teeth are going like -- i can’t.
i look into her face, through her little punky bit. i imagine sticking my finger in to make her eyes pop out. no, i imagine that - i imagined doing that - and as my hand moves down her body, i - i - i’m crying. my fingers are gripping her but, i can’t.
i can feel how scared she is, how much pain she’s in but, i can’t.
i hold her to me tightly - i hold her onto me tighter - i hold her onto me tighter until i feel her bones crack against me and the chattering stop. everything is quiet. and she is safe.”
