we are all victims of ourselves

A world in which vampires and humans could live in harmony once more -- that was the one goal Chohee strived towards always. It was the goal that Arcadia strove for. A world in which the species could live in both peace and equality. Yet the natural fear of the unknown, fear of differences, and the societal flaw of bigotry only seemed to expand within the hearts of many, making such a taste seem nearly impossible. 

Regardless, vampires and humans alike did try. Try to establish a connection of understanding, to understand their inherently natural differences, because, if you thought about it, they weren’t that much different. And at times, it did work. For Chohee, the collaborative missions and collaborations between the Ouroboro’s faction and Arcadia was the beginning of such a world. Wherein a mutual trust and reliance could be slowly developed. 

Today was one such day. Assigned to lead a team of heroes in a collaborative assignment with knights from ouroboros, Chohee had been briefed on the case a day before the two factions convened. The mission was a simple extraction mission: retrieve and leave. 

Word had gotten out that Timeturner Inc. had employed a new experimentation factory far from seoul and within the confines of the mountainous forests. The two teams were assigned to gather any intel they could and report back to headquarters. Depending on the circumstances, they were also given orders to extract any potential victims of experimentation. 

The teams had already staked out the facilities for a week, gaining significant intel regarding the times of patrol, headcount of the workers, and also an understanding of the facilities infrastructure. They’d even managed to receive inside information on the details of the experimentation, from where the kids were kept to where they’d be each hour. 

The patrols at the south location were about to go break, presenting the team with 5 minutes to infiltrate the infirmary, a large open expanse with beds where the children were kept. As the patrol’s moved out for rotation, Chohee signaled towards Irene, giving her the green light for her team.

☁ too fast to live, too young to die

Everybody looks forward to the weekend but for those working in the field much like Skylar herself, weekends are just like every other work day there is; what truly mattered are those rare days and nights off they get in between. Working for the army is hectic to say the least but it has become too much a part of her life for her to want anything else. She’s used to do this and so she has learned to make the most of her breaks. 

“Sorry, I’m late! Traffic was a bitch.” She says in greeting as the passenger door to her car open and someone slides into the shotgun seat beside her. The lights of the apartment complex’s driveway barely manage to illuminate the inside of the car thanks to the heavily tinted windows but it’s not too much of a disability, for their kind at least. Once they’re strapped in, she easily drives the car back into the streets of Seoul and thankfully this time, traffic isn’t so bad in this area. 

“You’d think that less people would be on the streets given that it’s a Monday and all but nooo....” The irritation in her voice is obvious as they start cruising about the now-less populated streets. Hongdae is all the way on the other side of the Han River and it’d still take them at least half an hour to get there completely without traffic. As soon as the red light turns green, Skylar steps on the gas, her impatience showing as the streetlamps begin to blur into one at the speed they are going. Speed has always been her thing.

Weakness - Irene + Wonshik

For a long time, Wonshik has known he was a weak vampire. He’d been warned by Yongsu while he was still learning how to live his knew life that he wouldn’t be winning many battles. He was stronger than humans, but everyone else could trump him with a flick of their finger - especially the Nobles. Yongsu had told him time and time again he should take a self defense class so he could at least protect himself, but he’d stupidly put it off.

He was paying for it now, cornered in an alley, sweat coating his brow as his vision swam from exhaustion. The hunter had been pursuing him for nearly an hour, tireless as anything. How he was able to keep up, Wonshik didn’t know - he didn’t understand. He was supposed to have higher endurance than humans, wasn’t he? How did they manage to follow him so easily?

“Please...” Wonshik panted heavily, his knees shaking as he leaned heavily against the wall. He wanted to jump up onto the fire escape and try to get away, but he had so little strength left. He tried to rush out of the way as the weapon swung towards him, managing to dodge just in time only to get tripped up by the hunter’s extended foot. He slammed down onto his face, trying to scramble to his feet in a panic. He moved just fast enough to avoid a lethal strike, but the weapon still struck its mark, piercing his side and making him cry out in pain.

Throwing his foot out, he kicked the hunter off him, the weapon pulling out of his body. He clamped a hand over the bleeding wound as he rushed to his feet again, running the few feet to the end of the alley before he stumbled and fell into the street. He was too tired, too hurt now...god this really was the end for him. All because he was just so, so hopelessly weak. He lifted his head, his vision blurring as he stared up at the man that would be his doom. He shook his head slowly, silently pleading with him. It wasn’t his time yet - he didn’t want to die.

*ADRENALINE HIGH

PRIDE SURGES forceful through her veins, intoxicating, compelling worries away and soothing down all fear and unease into the quiet thumps of a dead heart pumping adrenaline into her system. it’s incredible what a few kind gestures can do to a person; how they can urge them to oblige commands willfully, on their very own accords. and soojung, if nothing else, has always been good at those two things - FOLLOWING ORDERS and RECEIVING PRAISE.

( it has been beaten into her, this need to prove, prove, prove, when every reward tastes sweeter than the one before. sugar rush. addiction. a need to be needed. )

and it has never before been more apparent than when irene asks of HER as a backup for their latest mission. it almost all feels worth it then, the grand idea that she’s serving a purpose, saving a life ( saving many? ). this isn’t for the royals she’s been taught she’s meant to serve, or a family so narrowly assembled they’d leave their own son HELPLESS on the streets to keep their faulty morals straight. this is for her. this is an act of SELFISHNESS.

it’s okay to admit it. it almost makes it less of a burden; like the thought that tonight she’ll spill blood, but it’s not really a murder, it’s only right. delusions like these make it easier to cope with a budding sense of reality - it’s good to smother these indicators while they’re still dormant in their crib.

tonight her combat boots seem heavier than they did yesterday or the day before, when she crouches in the shadows of their cover, muscles taut, and lets her whispers die fresh into their travel through the nightly darkness. she tries not to make her EXCITEMENT too obvious, expression delightfully nonchalant but arms never left to swing uselessly at her sides.

she knows the plan down to the tiniest details, but waits for irene’s signal like any dutiful soldier would. perhaps it should concern her that her mouth distorts into the image of a SMILE, “this won’t do.” she notes, back against bricks, “ we have to get closer to the hunters’ base. they’re not too many, it’s not really that big of a risk.”
