it wasn’t often that he was allowed to follow instead of lead, but it was most definitely easy to let skylar lead him. taekwoon thought it felt almost comforting to know that he could fall into step or even slightly behind skylar and not having to panic. she would take control of the situation and she did so beautifully. like areum but different. skylar was more forceful but it was a quality taekwoon accepted and adored in her. she needed to be forceful, and confident. her job would not allow her to be different for for the jung heir it was like reassurance to see that he’d be in good hands if he’d give the reigns to skylar. at the nickname, taekwoon couldn’t help but blush. he nodded. she was right. the two of them weren’t exactly normal. skylar let him know that next time he could pay and while it was a nice thought, taekwoon could already feel dread in the pit of his stomach. when would they be able to escape like this again? not anytime soon, unfortunately.
shaking off the negative thoughts, taekwoon reluctantly let go of her hand before turning to find themselves a seat. spotting a small table near the window, the royal vampire slowly walked over - manoeuvring between the tables until he was at the table in the corner. pulling back a chair, taekwoon slipped into the corner and glanced fleetingly at the dark night sky before turning his head to face the counter where he watched skylar order their coffee. the order was quickly made (as they were one of the very few customers so late in the evening) and taekwoon watched skylar walk over with their order. taekwoon’s lips puckered into a sweet smile, eyes twinkling at the sight of coffee. skylar set down the cup before him and taekwoon immediately reached out for it, long fingers curling around the porselain. a comfortable silent followed in which skylar sipped from her drink and taekwoon blew softly into his own cup, not yet drinking the hot liquid.
when taekwoon finally lifted his cup to take his first sip, letting his taste buds get reacquainted with the human food, their gazes met and taekwoon’s lips curled into a smile around the rim of his cup. skylar spoke then and what she said had the royal chuckle lightly, setting down his cup again before glancing over at the counter where he could see the lady peek at them. once she realised she was caught, the woman grinned and waved politely to which taekwoon nodded quickly, feeling a little flustered. “ah, yeah..” he mumbled before turning back to face skylar again, playful smile on his face. “what did you tell her?” he asked, curious. the fingers of his left hand played with the edge of his coffee cup, drawing small circles. “i suppose we do make a strange sight.. the driver was giving us looks through the rearview mirror too” taekwoon added, flashing pearly white teeth.
Even the small smiles shared between them mean so much more in the private moment of being in each other’s company and this time isn’t any different. For a long while, Skylar has lost her reason to smile; the horrors of both her personal journey and the experience of working in the army have given more than enough causes to forget how to smile thus the act in itself has become almost a prized possession. Taekwoon seems to the lucky one in the sense that he is only one of the chosen few who gets to witness the beautiful upward turn of her lips, the way the cherry red of her lips delicately pulls to reveal a perfect set of teeth. It’s so easy to smile when she’s around him and instead of wasting her time trying to figure out why it so, she simply lets herself enjoy the moment and the opportunity to spend time with him.
“I told her that you whisked me away for some alone time together.” She answers with a chuckle of her own, not needing to turn around to know that his flusteredness is a result of the old lady watching them. Seeing him get all shy and embarrassed warms her heart incredibly and she has to physically hold herself back from reaching out, cupping his cheeks and placing a kiss on his adorable face. To distract herself, she begins idly stirring the hot liquid of her drink with the wooden stirrer the cafe provided-- it, thankfully, allows her to refocus on their conversation and push all thoughts of wanting to kiss the prince to the back of her head. Such thoughts are dangerous to entertain anyways. “I think she firmly believes that we’ve either come straight out of a fairytale or are secretly celebrities hiding from the paparazzi.”
The two of them share another round of smiles and laughs and it’s easy to pretend that the world around them doesn’t exist as they continue to indulge in the moment. Soft jazz music plays in the background as is customary with most cafes and it aids in helping both Skylar and Taekwoon to relax, something they both need after having attended the party earlier. “The coffee is really good here, thank you for bringing me here. Next time, I feel as though it would be nice to have another cup of their coffee whilst being surrounded by warm and cuddly blankets. Do you think it’s weird of me to think that?” Her question is punctuated with her sipping from her latte, the foam leaving her with an unintentional milk mustache once she pulls her lips away from the porcelain edge.
2/∞ of Kang Skylar: The Prince and the Pauper
( jung taekwoon x kang skylar )
there i was again tonight; forcing laughter, faking smiles -- same old tired lonely place walls of insincerity, shifting eyes and vacancy vanished when i saw your face all i can say is, i was enchanted to meet you.
☁ until the moon rises
the hand on his in taekwoon’s lap does not bother him. perhaps it should. maybe he should establish some proper boundaries between them yet the royal did not particularly care for setting them. he felt at ease around skylar (seulgi actually, but he didn’t dare call her that yet). if skylar wanted to hold his hand then he would let her, just as she had allowed him to pull her against him. her face in the crook of his neck had been something different and the heir had perhaps been too alerted by the little puffs of breath against his skin but again, he’d allowed her just as she had allowed him. allowance; the two of them seemed to silently have agreed that anything was allowed between them. until one of them would indicate otherwise, and so far that hadn’t happened yet. taekwoon surprised himself by how lenient he could be where skylar was involved.
she wasn’t picky, she had said and taekwoon let out a soft breath of relief. somehow he always felt as if he needed to be told his opinions, interests and tastes were alright. the royal was so often surrounded by people who doubted the things he said and did that he couldn’t help but be nervous suggesting things when he was around skylar. but she was much more accepting than the staff taekwoon dealt with on a daily basis. the vampire smiled cutely, eyes twinkling happily as he nodded. the ride was quiet and taekwoon spent most of it looking out the window and watching the city lights in awe. he wasn’t often presented with the opportunity to just enjoy and explore the world around him. sheltered as he had always been, the royal was never given many chances to venture into the unknown. however, now in the taxi and alone with skylar, taekwoon eagerly let his eyes wander, soaking into the beauty of seoul which passed in vibrant colours as the car drove.
soon they arrived at destination and skylar tugged taekwoon out of the taxi. the dark-haired male quickly paid the driver before he let himself be dragged into the very small and cosy coffee shop. once inside, skylar offered to pay and taekwoon blushed a little - his eyes wandering around the place nervously, shyly. “are you sure?” he finally asked, glancing back at skylar. it had been his idea to leave, his idea to find a cafe to have a warm cup of coffee so he felt a bit hesitant to let skylar pay for their order. “it’s… unusual for the girl to pay” taekwoon quickly reasoned, although his reasoning was odd. they weren’t a couple nor were they dating. it should not matter who paid but taekwoon felt a little bashful at skylar’s suggestion. taekwoon reached up to sheepishly rub his neck, smiling cutely once his shyness eased somewhat. “ehm.. caramel macchiato then?” he gave in.
“When have we ever been normal, Taek?” She asked, obviously teasing as the corners of her eyes crinkle with her smile. It’s so so easy to be like this around him especially when they have a moment alone to the themselves like this. Yes, they are technically in public but without the watchful eyes of the other nobles, the members of the royal court and his guards, just basking in each other’s company gives them a concrete semblance of privacy. “You can be the one to pay during our next late night coffee run.” Her reassurance is matched by the gentle squeeze she gives his hand before letting go in order to walk up to the counter and place their orders.
From the corner of her eye, she watches Taekwoon take a seat at one of the tables in the other of the room and for a moment, her gaze lingers on him initially to make sure that of his safety but soon after a feeling of awe takes its place. It’s still surreal to her when she realizes how many rules, regulations and protocols the two of them (her especially) are breaking by being in each other’s company just as they are now. But, at the same time, the two of them simply cannot stop seeking the other’s company; at first, she had though that it is something only she was feeling and thus, she tried hard to get over and erase it yet it always worked against her. Missing Taekwoon in the times that they were apart is an understatement for the feeling goes beyond just a simple “I missed you” and he knows this too, feels the same way she does and that’s the reason why they have become closer than what is considered customary.
Her train of thoughts is broken when she hears her name being called to claim their orders; one caramel macchiato and one latter with an extra pump of vanilla. She brings the tray carefully to their table and is equally just as mindful when she sets Taekwoon’s drink in front of him. Soon after, she takes a seat across from him with her own drink in front of her. They are quiet for a few moments until their gazes catch each other’s once more over sips of their respective drinks. “The old lady at the counter asked me if the two of us had come from a fancy dinner date because of what we are wearing.” She tells him as she recounts the conversation she had earlier. “If only she had known how utterly happy we are to be in here instead of at the villa.”
☁ too fast to live, too young to die
“please, i’m fully fluent when it comes to the language of food.” irene sent a wink her way, letting out a small laughter shortly after. “i haven’t eaten anything in weeks, it’s driving me insane.” it was partly why the two girls managed to get along so well in her opinion; when it comes to eating human food, they were like bottomless pits. she could almost smell the aroma of meat coming their way, stomach growling at the mere thought of it.
the knight let skylar lead their way through the streets. younger one has always been better with direction ( minus the habit of speeding through the light stops, of course ), if anything it’d be irene texting to ask about specific locations of places around seoul. eyes quickly scanning over the club skylar had pointed out, irene eagerly nodded. the place didn’t look too shabby at all, a line long enough to let them know that it was good– not that she was particularly picky about where to go clubbing. hell they could have a night in back at home and she’d still be content.
arriving at the restaurant and seated opposite of the colonel shortly after, she clapped her hands lightly in excitement with a wide grin on her face. “i think we can eat everything they’ve got. heck, we’ll probably sell them out for the whole month, if we really try.” irene chuckled, flipping through the menu provided. almost everything looked so good and her thought vaguely wandered to how it would feel to have to eat regularly to function properly. whilst drinking blood from another individual is pleasant, it was a completely different experience to consume food. “should we get what we got last time? or do you want anything else?”
“Somehow I have a feeling that not eating is so much better than eating the stuff they feed us in the army.” The face she makes would have been extremely comical if her disapproval isn’t so sincere. Vampires like them do not need the sustenance of nutrition provided by human food but having lived with the humans for so long, they have grown accustomed to it and indulge in its flavors once in a while. Blood is their life source while human food is a delicacy. “I swear, it’s more like mush than actual food, you wouldn’t want to eat it.”
The smell of grilling meat is enough to make Skylar’s mouth water and stomach growl so she and Irene don’t waste a single second as they begin flipping through the menu eagerly, much to the amusement and delight of their assigned server. Looking through all the variants, everything does look good so she doesn’t blame Irene from thinking about wanting to order everything on the menu. “I think the ones we ordered last time would be great except we should maybe get more portions this time.” She suggests with a laugh in her voice and this time their server cannot help but laugh along; it must really be quite a sight to behold to have two pretty girls ordering so much food. Turning to the waiter, Skylar points to the set that contains fried rice, pork belly, beef tenderloin and various Korean side dishes. “We’ll take this one please but can you give us an additional serving of the pork and beef each please?”
With their orders in place and iced cola in their hands, they easily resume conversation and add to the happy chatter filling the restaurant. “So, how have you been doing? Broken any hearts or noses in these last few weeks?”

aches & cravings :
DRIP. drip. drop. jace bit his tongue, uncaring of the blood that filled his mouth. swaying slightly, the rogue squinted at the lowering sun ( emerging from a dark alley ). his sleeve was torn, revealing the snake that lapped at at the blood flowing freely. or so was the sight of his tattoo, in jace’s mind. he had been quite violent; the man jace had victimised. the man who had fought for his life until his last dying breath. the man had been different. jace had been careless. a flash of silver ( slicing an upper arm ). jace had been surprised, barely catching the arm which had aimed for his waist next. the rogue bled from a small cut above his hipbone ( one not nearly as severe ).
JACE wanted to curse. scream. throw a tantrum. someone wounded him ( fucking injured him! ). the man had paid with his life for that grave mistake. the blond would have let him live. truly ( really? ). jace groaned softly; eyelids fluttering closed over black eyes. he fell ( a wall caught him ). sliding down the rough stone, the rogue vampire fought against the shifting world ( one which spun behind closed eyes ). blood loss. how pathetic. hadn’t he just fed? jace wasn’t supposed to bleed out ( not from a stupid knife wound ). not from an injury to his arm. the rogue brought up a shaky hand; fingers enclosing around the wound. thick, warm blood oozed between his fingers ( jace sighed ).
SWEAT trickled down his forehead. tick. tock. time was slipping ( and jace’s grasp on control too ). villainous was what he usually was; beastly is what he would become if jace gave in. the call of his nature was strong, but jace was quick-witted. he realised that if he let out the monster now, he would perish. injured as he was, jace would most definitely not survive the night as a beast. footsteps. jace heard them. the scent of another vampire. male or female? jace refused to open his eyes. not all vampires accepted rogues. no, they slaughtered them. it was legal after all ( murder upon sight ). footsteps stopped. jace’s brain worked; eyes flickering back and forth in the darkness. “help” he uttered, the blood seeping past his lips ( down his neck, into his grey shirt ). a rogue pretending to be helpless ( really ).
( @pxskylar )
The smell of blood hits her nose even before she sees the injured stranger. Finding herself unable to refuse her body’s natural reactions to blood, she follows the scent until it eventually leads her to the back alleyway of some building where the scent is the strongest. Blood is everywhere but instead of finding it tempting, her eyes zero in on the injury that she surmises is the reason for all the red liquid. She spends the next thirty seconds looking around the area in search of any signs of attack, foul play and any other forms of threat-- though she feels the need to help, it doesn’t hurt to be on the careful side either. It is only when she finds none that crouches down to the man’s level to begin administering first aid.
Closer inspection allows her to take note of the stranger’s handsome features and Skylar cannot deny the sense of pity that she feels at seeing someone as good looking as him wounded and bloodied. The gash in itself isn’t entirely too deep for it to be lethal but it has caused enough damage to the layers of his skin and some parts of his muscles which should explain why there is so much blood. Thankfully, her limited knowledge on first aid includes knowing how to deal with such injuries so she knows she can pretty much take care of it herself without needing to bring the stranger to the hospital.
“Excuse me? Sir, can you hear me?” Though modulated, her voice practically echoes in the silence and stillness of the alleyway as she tries to converse with her patient. “My name is Skylar and I’m here to help you out.” Gentle fingers cup the man’s bloodied cheeks and her thumbs are equally as careful as they rub against his skin in hopes of rousing him to consciousness. A part of her warns her to be careful but with a military title up her sleeve, Skylar assures herself that she can handle whatever may happen next. She isn’t a damsel in distress in anyway and is obviously not in any form of danger.
Oh, how wrong she was.

“Me neither.”
Those words were uttered quickly, hoping his father would not hear them as the pair was joined by their parents beaming with happiness, filled with pride to have solved the marriage problem so easily. Woobin wasn’t disgusted, knowing well how many noble vampires married young, but he had clearly other plans to how he would solve this matter and it didn’t include his father. They never shared kind words, in fact this was one of the rare moment the two males seemed to look like a normal functioning family and some love was found. It was all a lie, but then again this meeting was as well so it all fit together in the most annoying way possible. To the young male this meeting, the whole dinner, was a waste of time even if the girl before him was a beauty.
I can only reciprocate the feelings,“ he spoke calmly, ignoring the wine before him as the scent was not one he found appealing and it was a small cause for annoyance to his father. Woobin surely is not a rebellion filled teenager, but at the given moment he wished to simply show his small distaste for the event on hand - it was so planned and fake one wondered if the four weren’t wax figures made to move. Not opposing marrying a commoner. Not opposed to her looks nor voice, even less that her mother was a gossiped about social climber. The true reason for his rather unmannered remarks was his disinterest to be a tool in his fathers own climb.
His eyes for a brief moment lock with hers, even a small pang of guilt within him as he would wish to make this easier yet couldn’t, the noble vampire was not to sit silently at this parade of lies. "Even though I have heard such wonderful things about you and your beauty, I truly and honestly can only confirm the statement. Yet to be a respectful man I need to state I shall marry this girl, father,” he spoke calmly, but his tone gave away the fact he had made up his mind, not for a second even acting the part just to please someone. Looking at the female, still keeping eye contact, he naturally wouldn’t muddy her honour. “You are surely a wonderful girl, but this goes against what I desire.”
A silence settled over the table leaving the young vampire waiting for an answer, feeling lighter of knowing he had said his piece and maybe even affected a change. For from it sadly - their parents simply continued on as if his words had been for deaf ears.
Skylar finds reprieve in the silence that fills the table; the relief resonates within her body until she feels all her earlier tension ebb away and disappear completely. It’s utterly refreshing to know that she no longer has to keep up their little charade of false pretenses just as it is comforting to know that her supposed fiance feels the same. Honesty has always been a virtue she valued so she feels better knowing that she no longer has to lie to her mother about anything. “You flatter me too much with comments on my beauty, Woobin-ss, but I think the quality I like the best on you is your honesty especially seeing as we both feel the same way.”
The sound of silverware stops as both their parents look at them with a frighteningly calm expression as they wait for Skylar to say her piece. “I’m sure many would kill to be in my shoes at the this very moment but it is neither my desire to be your fiancee nor my desire to spend the rest of my life to you. I’m sorry if that sounds terrible but I see no other way to say it.” Everyone else around them is oblivious to the sudden tense atmosphere around the quartet and she doesn’t know if she should feel scared for what is about to come next or enjoy the supposed privacy bestowed on them.
“That’s nice to know, Skylar dear.” Her mother begins and the smile on her face is chillingly calm and entirely not what she had expected. They may not be a noble family but her mother has enough personality and character to fill in the role of the matron of the Kang family. Beside the elder woman, Woobin’s father echoes her smile and everything else seems to go down hill from there. “We expected as much with the two of you both being stubborn as mules with your idealistic independent views but we want you both to know that there’s nothing else you can do. You are to be wed in a year’s time. Preparations have already begun so I suggest that you spend these next few months getting comfortable around each other instead of trying to go against this.”
☁ until the moon rises
taekwoon glanced down at the woman next to him, a handsome smile on his face as he nodded. she’d seen him before, drinking coffee until late in the night whenever he had a lot of paperwork to finish. when they’d first properly interacted, skylar had been there with a hot cup of coffee too. it seemed only fitting that they would escape together to enjoy coffee so close to midnight. it would most likely keep them up for a while but taekwoon found that he wasn’t against that idea. being in skylar’s presence was simple, talking to her was relaxing and having fun with her was a like a fresh breeze in the scorching heat. taekwoon could feel at ease when he was with skylar, most of the time anyway. she looked at him like she would look at any other person: as if he was a normal, not special or needing particular treatment.
“yes let’s do that. taxi sounds better” taekwoon agreed softly when skylar offered to hail a taxi. he wasn’t about to let anyone follow them now that he had gone through all the effort to actually escape the party. if one could call it that. it was more a display of pride, with nobles boasting about all their achievements and trophies. taekwoon did not wish to be a part of such behaviour. the two of them start walking down the path which led through the meticulously groomed garden to the front gates.
the royal felt skylar squeeze his hand and he returned the gesture before pushing open the gates with his free hand. once on the public road, taekwoon let go of skylar’s hand and instead wrapped an arm around her shoulders, suddenly concerned about the cold night’s air. they were both vampires, they could handle a bit of cold but it was simply in taekwoon’s nature to want to look out for women like skylar - those close to his heart and who he saw as fragile even when they absolutely weren’t. in fact, taekwoon was sure skylar could beat him anytime she wanted but that wasn’t important. smiling briefly at skylar as he pulled her into his sturdy chest, taekwoon then looked into the night and raised a free hand, hoping a taxi would notice.
one did shortly after and taekwoon gently ushered skylar into the taxi before getting in himself and quickly closing the door. instinctively, taekwoon slid further into the seat, ducking his head a bit as he peeked out of the window to see if anyone had seen them get into the taxi. seeing no one, taekwoon let out a short sigh of relief before facing the taxi driver who looked at taekwoon in the rearview mirror with thick, raised eyebrows. the dark-haired male flushed a little before clearing his throat. “coffee libre, dongjin market” the freckled man mumbled quickly, watching as the taxi driver acknowledged the instructions before peeking at skylar again. “it’s a small place but they have the best coffee”
The smile on her face seems almost permanent whenever she’s around Taekwoon but it’s something she cannot help despite it being uncharacteristic of hers. Somehow it just seems like there are a million reasons to smile about when they’re together; an arrangement that only goes to prove the depth of their relationship. His embrace comes as a slight surprise but it is one that she adapts to fairly quickly as she wastes no time in wrapping her own arms around his torso and burying her face into the crook of his neck. She’s sure that they are quite the sight as the taxi pulls up a few moments later and neither of them have pulled away. Thankfully, the taxi driver is discreet and gives no indication that he’s uncomfortable or suspicious about his new passengers.
“I’m not picky, don’t worry.” A reassuring smile is what she sends his way as her hand reaches to cover his which is resting on his lap. The light from the villa follows them until the vehicle turns the curb and only then does Skylar let herself relax; the sneaking around like rebellious teenagers is fun and all but she cannot deny the slight worry and apprehension she had felt knowing that they were going against the rules. But she leaves it all behind now and turns her attention on Taekwoon and readies herself to enjoy the night (or wee hours of morning) opening before them. “I’m sure we’ll have a great time.”
The drive to Dongjin Market takes shorter than she originally expected so she’s a bit jostled out of her reverie when the driver comes to a stop in front of the coffee shop. Seoul is beautiful but it takes on a whole other beauty of its own at night so most of the car ride was spent watching the lights of the city as it passes by on the car window. She and Taekwoon hold hands again once they step out of the vehicle and their hands remain enclosed in each other’s even as they enter the cafe. The two of them may have been quite the sight in their formal attire but thankfully there isn’t many people inside to gawk at them. “What do you want to have? I’ll treat you this time.”
☁ too fast to live, too young to die
irene reached to the side to pat her head, letting out a coo at skylar’s previous words. “ah yes, of course i’d be the responsible one out of the two of us.” she snickered, mildly amused over the fact that the younger vampire had called her mum. the knight had always been naturally nurturing, especially towards those she mentored. “i guess i can do that, save your ass out of trouble like i always do.”
stepping out of the car, irene couldn’t help but to feel excited at the view of the bustling streets. it was like a breath of fresh air after weeks of non-stop work, surrounded by other people and just life around the city. it felt almost like therapy, seeing different colours of neon signs and the sound of music playing in different stores. as much as she loves solidarity during her time off, a company in nights like this was very much needed.
she didn’t hesitate when skylar linked their arms together, if anything irene pulled them closer together as the squeezed their way between the crowd. “barbecued beef sounds nice…” she let out a contemplative hum, swiftly navigating their ways through the bustling street of hongdae. “i’ve been craving red meat for a while now. we can get chicken and pizza as like a midnight snack later too!”
even the thought of food itself made her stomach growl, the fact that they had to drink blood forgotten for the sake of small human pleasures in life. “do you remember the first place we ever went to together, with the bomb-ass meat? it was in hongdae as well, wasn’t it?
“I like it when you talk my language.”
Enhanced hearing allowed for Skylar to hear every sound surrounding her but despite this, her attention remains focused on the conversation she and Irene are sharing. The mere mention of meat has her mouth watering and taste buds craving for the taste. Blood may be their main source of daily sustenance but there is nothing wrong in indulging on human delicacies to indulge their palette once in a while. “The whole in the wall place that serves the best samgyupsal and hanwoo? Yup, it’s a couple of streets down from where we are now.”
Grinning, she wastes no time in tugging the older down the street and deeper into the music and lights of Hongdae. Summer is already well on its way to heating up the lives of those in Seoul but the nights still remained slight chilly so jackets and cardigans are still acceptable to be worn during the after hours. Skylar stuffs her free hand into one of the pockets of her leather jacket as they walk to save herself from the trouble of accidentally hitting or colliding into someone.
“That club looks promising. Want to go there after?” She points as they pass by a particular establishment playing good music with a steady line of patrons waiting outside. It seems wholesome enough which means there are less chances for them to be caught in the middle of a bar fight or anything of that sort. Finally, they arrive in the restaurant and are seated quickly despite the fullness of the place. “How many servings do you think we can finish? I’m pretty hungry, to be honest.”

“Just to be clear, I’m not marrying you.”
Even with the false pleasantries in her voice, Skylar makes sure to be gentle as she straightens out the bow tie adorning the male’s neck. It’s all part of the show, of course, as their respective parents slide into the seat across from them in a matter of seconds. Both elders look more than happy and it’s clear that they have witnessed the little display of affection exchanged between their children. Skylar already feels like she’s going to be sick but she schools her expression into one of fake excitement and reminds herself inwardly that she only has to survive dinner and then they’ll be off.
“Well, it looks like you two are getting along just fine, I’m assuming you two have exchanged greetings then?” Stopping herself from rolling her eyes at her mother, she plasters a smile on her face and turns to look at her companion like he is the best thing to happen to her so far. Their gazes meet and she’s relieved to find that both of them share the same disgust and reluctance at being in this dinner; it gives Skylar a sense of comfort knowing that she’s not alone in this. Her mother really has the worst social climbing ways and it seems that the old woman has managed to charm another nobleman into agreeing to marry off their children.
Wine is poured in between small talk and the whole pretense of liking each other; the dinner has barely begun and all she wants to do is to get out of here. “Please believe me when I say that it is a truly a pleasure to meet you and your father, Woobin.” She says in between sips of wine, making sure to play the part of the shy yet respectable woman her mother ought her out to be. “My mother has told me so many great things about you.”

the knight could hear the palpitation of her heart in her ears, feeling her the years she’d live decrease in such rapid pace with each passing seconds in that vehicle. irene cursed the fact that the warrior had known her far too well to be able to invoke certain behaviours and actions. the look that she shot her had displayed how utterly unimpressed she was, albeit trying to hold down how terrified she felt.
“one of these days, you’re going to get in trouble…” she murmured in an exasperated tone, a little too dramatic to actually be serious about the whole speeding fiesta. “even worse, you’re going to hurt yourself and not even our powers could help you heal. what the hell are you going to do when that happens, skylar kang?”
she could only rejoice when they entered the busy area of hongdae, holding her arms out towards the sky as if thanking gods that they’d arrived in one piece. visibly relaxing in her seat, irene shot her a smile at last. “do you even need to ask if we’re going to eat?” she questioned back, playfully this time as they searched for a parking spot. “i don’t want to be too drunk to enjoy my food so definitely food first before clubbing.”
“i want to eat until i hate my life, then i’m going to drown myself in booze. that sounds like a good plan, doesn’t it?”
“What else? I’m going to give you a call, mom.” The thing about Skylar is that she is so good at multitasking, it’s both a blessing and a curse truthfully, so it comes as no surprise that she’s able to tease the older whilst completing a parallel park. She can already tell that Irene is rolling her eyes even without completely looking at the other girl’s face; they know each other well enough like that.
The streets of Hongdae are so full of life as it brims with people and color. It’s exactly what the two warriors need after all the days they’ve spent neck-deep in work. Days off are truly a blessing to those who work the hardest. Slinging her purse around her shoulder, they easily disappear into the crowd as they walk along the street in search of a good place to eat. There are street vendors selling various trinkets and odd times and stores playing loud music to attract the attention of passing customers. Around them people are laughing and playing around with companions and it gets Skylar even more excited.
“Definitely a good plan.” She agrees wholeheartedly, linking their arms together so that they don’t end up losing each other in the sea of people. “I am so hungry all I can think about is food. Should we go for chicken and pizza or barbecued meat? I can’t decide.”

taekwoon had the decency to blush when skylar pressed a kiss against his hand, not having expected such a reaction from her. for e moment, the jung heir appeared lost until he focused on her words which had followed. mentally shaking his thoughts away, taekwoon smiled and nodded. he bit his lower lip at the wink she sent him, feeling a little giddy at knowing they were about to flee a party he was supposed to attend all the way to the end. he wouldn’t though, and that in itself felt like a rebellious act to the royal vampire. it had been years since he’d last gone against specific orders from the board.
skylar took his hand in hers and he let her, feeling comfortable enough to share some skinship with the woman he could call his friend. she asked if he was ready, whether they could go and taekwoon simply nodded, sensing familiarity in the situation. the two of them now, on the balcony, resembled what taekwoon and areum had. areum used to take the lead too, grabbing his hand and asking if they were ready to go - wherever going lead to. now, it was skylar, who initiated intimate skinship and possessed leadership qualities of her own. taekwoon found that he was often at ease with skylar, able to fall back like he had when areum and him had still been kids. he was asked to lead now, being the male heir, but it felt nice depending on someone else to tug him along again.
and so they went, hiding their hands as they carefully slipped into the ballroom again and avoiding eyes. whenever someone did look into their direction, taekwoon quickly jerked skylar behind a pillar or a fancy-looking antique cabinet. his heart was racing but not due to nerves. no, he felt excitement at being able to snoop around like rebelling teenagers. taekwoon’s eyes twinkled and when they had finally reached the villa’s doors and escaped the house, taekwoon let out a soft laugh. the night’s sky was dark and the wind blew softly. taekwoon inhaled the fresh air and glanced over at skylar with a childlike grin. “so, let’s eat?” in taekwoon’s case, he would probably comfort himself with only a coffee.
“You mean you want to drink coffee, right?”
There’s that playful to her voice again that only ever reveals itself when she’s with the prince; her normally serious and uptight personality ebbing away with each touch of their hands and the brushing of their fingertips. When she thinks of relaxation, she now thinks of him and the hours they could spend lazing around on warm sheets and soft beds, of laughing over random jokes and sharing mundane stories about their days, she thinks of being able to sleep in and being able to escape the pressures of their roles. She cannot help but hope for tonight be one of those nights, the two of them deserve it.
She laughs along with him and it’s easy and light, their fingers still intertwined and it’s obvious that neither of them are wanting to let go. Having finally escaped from the party, they are much more relaxed for they no longer have to be wary of eyes lingering on their forms and watching their every move. There is no more need for pretending and no more show to put up, it’s just the two of them; Taekwoon and Seulgi. “We can take a cab back to the city if that’s okay with you. Using an official vehicle is an option too but it might be easier for them to trail us that way. Do you have a preference?”
Her words are punctuated with the smile she sends his way, one that not even the darkness could hide. There’s thankfully no one else around outside the villa and it makes their escape even more real now that they actually are walking away from the party. A part of her thinks about how much trouble she’ll get into if anyone ever finds out but she reassures herself that it’s a worry to be thought of another day. Carpe diem, she thinks and gives his hand a little squeeze.

taekwoon’s nervousness settled a little when skylar told him she’d be staying a little while more. she replied to his question jokingly, surprising the jung heir and yet he should have seen it coming. he had noticed that skylar had the tendency to respond to many things with a joke or a smile - seemingly uncomfortable with being serious. that made her the complete opposite to taekwoon, who had to adopt a professional and serious attitude to most things and people in life. taekwoon did not mind her joking, but it kept startling him whenever she used jokes as a defence mechanism in less appropriate situations. not that they were necessarily in an inappropriate situation to joke about. in fact, she may have involuntarily diffused a bit of the tension that had lingered between them ever since he found skylar on the balcony.
however, skylar may have been aware of the differences in their social standing and what interactions would be deemed appropriate because no sooner had she made the joke than she apologised for it. taekwoon observed her facial expression and the way she averted her gaze, effectively breaking eye contact. her whole demeanour screamed shyness, which basically rained down on taekwoon like bricks. never would taekwoon have thought that the ruthless, dependable and strong colonel of one of the army’s regiments would actually turn out to be quite a shy woman. then again, taekwoon wasn’t all he seemed to make himself out to be either.
chuckling softly, taekwoon lowered his own gaze, looking at the tips of his shoes as skylar continued speaking and revealed to him the extent of her dislike towards formal gatherings. taekwoon shared her opinion but was careful to voice his thoughts. but perhaps he could at least reveal that they had two similar minds. “hmm-” taekwoon hummed, raising his head to look at her once more. “- they are not exactly my cup of tea either.. but we have to go every now and then, don’t we? we’re obliged to” okay, so he may have revealed more than he had initially intended but skylar was trustworthy. “i’m glad you waited.. it would have been a shame if we missed each other” taekwoon allowed himself another smile, lifting his hand to gently take skylar’s chin and force her to look at him. “i think my duties have been fulfilled.. shall we leave this boring party? i wasn’t exactly enjoying myself either” his smile widened into a playful grin.
Being with Taekwoon like this is still something that completely blows her mind especially when she knows that this is something that only the two of them share. But just as much as it awes her, Skylar cannot ever imagine saying no to being with him whether it be just a few stolen moments in parties like this or watching the sunrise from the window while sharing a blanket. She normally prides herself in being disciplined and having immense self-control yet when it comes to the prince, she is a total softie, easily succumbing to the idea of getting to spend more time with him.
“I’m glad I waited too,” she answers with the softest of smiles (those only meant for him) as she finally allows their gazes to lock against each other’s. A moment passes between them and though there are no words obviously uttered, there is an understanding between just the simple meeting of their eyes-- one that has her leaning into his touch until his fingers come to rest on her cheek and she is able to press a kiss on the palm of his hand. It’s sweetly intimate, just like most of their shared time together. “But I think that, yes, it is time for us to leave this boring party so that we can have some actual fun.”
She sends a wink over to him in playful jest as her own hand comes up to take his that is currently still resting on her cheek. Their fingers lace on their own as they share matching grins. Inside the ballroom, the music is loud and the chatter is even louder; everyone is either too busy gossiping or too drink to notice the both of them and it’s exactly what they need in order to make a quick getaway. “Where shall we go?”
“I have the right to be worried!”

Keeping her head hung low, Skylar is the epitome of guilt as she avoids total eye contact with Taekwoon. It’s been one dangerous mission after the other yet despite her exhaustion, she always ends up agreeing to do them. She pushes herself repeatedly to the very brink of her limit and tonight it seems that she cannot hide it anymore, especially from him. How worried must he have been these past two weeks for him to raise his voice at her like this? His anger isn’t new to her but on the occasions that she has witnessed it, it has never ever been directed at her, not even in the few times that they argued.
A tense silence envelopes his bedroom and it makes her sick knowing that she caused him such distress. “I’m not a child, Taekwoon-ah. I’m not fragile and I’m not going to break easily.” She reminds him when she finally finds her voice again but even it is wavering along with her resolve. It has always been impossible for her to stay mad at him. Hesitantly, she closes the distance between them and wraps her arms around his middle in a back hug. Words always tend to fail her in these kinds of situations so expressing her feelings through actions are the only effective way to communicate. Whatever it is between the two of them, she still doesn’t understand completely but she knows for sure that she never wants to see him this upset ever again.
“I’m sorry I worried you.” She mumbles against the cotton of his dress shirt, her face pressed against his back. “But I need to do all of those missions if I want to keep you safe. I’m doing it to protect you, Taek, because I don’t want you getting hurt.”
☁ too fast to live, too young to die
“the ones that you’re supposed to stop in when it turns red!” irene exclaimed, eyes fully wide at the sight of the blurring surroundings. “skylar kang, i swear to fucking god!” call her old and uptight ( she’s really neither of those things ), but the last thing she’d needed was to come back to the mansion in pieces– quite literally. she’d doubt that the young master would be impressed when she’s supposed to protect him and not to die in the hands of her friend from reckless driving.
knowing that skylar was notorious for speeding through the streets through personal experience, most often that not she’d ask herself: why the hell did i let her drive in the first place? greatly beneficial when they needed to get somewhere quickly and efficiently, but the night’s still young and surely there were plenty of police officers roaming around the area to catch them. the colonel and the high royal knight getting caught together, wouldn’t that be a comical sight?
“you’re going to kill us one day and it’s not going to be pretty.” irene spoke, knuckles turning white at how tightly she was clutching onto the leather cover of the seat. her eyes widened when the younger one turned her head to face her, fighting the urge to slap and keep the younger’s eyes towards the front. “and look at the goddamn road, not at me! please, don’t make this even worse than it already is.”
In response to all of Irene’s worries, the younger vampire only laughs but she doesn’t so because she means to be rude and disrespectful-- the reaction comes as a result of her sheer amusement at seeing her companion get so worked up. The two of them have known each other for most of their lives yet it never fails to amuse Skylar the way she always seems to know what buttons to press to elicit such memorable reactions from the knight.
Both she and Irene know that no accident is technically going to come their way and they have their vampire skills and senses to thank for it but it never seemed to hurt the other to worry incessantly still. “There is no one around to witness me skipping a few red lights so we’re fine.” She dismisses the other’s worry with a chuckle, one hand leaving the steering wheel to wave her hand nonchalantly in the air to prove her point.
All too soon, however, her little parade of fun is cut short when they eventually find themselves driving up the familiar people-filled streets of Hongdae. All the people walking around forces Skylar to slow down lest she wants to hit someone and at this, Irene is finally able to relax. “Do you want to grab something to eat first before we go hit the clubs?” She asks as her eyes search high and low for an available parking space.
