COCKATRICE
LEVEL: 3 (out of 35 possible)
TYPE: Magical Beast
SIZE: Small
ENVIRONMENT: Ruins & Forests (Earth)
SPECIAL POWERS and ABILITIES:
- Petrifying Scratch (Being bitten or scratched by a Cockatrice means a slow and agonizing death as the victim slowly turns into stone. While Medusa’s instantly turn you into a statue, the Cockatrice’s petrifying works a lot slower taking days, weeks or even months, but only few magic can save a victim.)
- Extremely Aggressive (While very small, little predators take a risk of attacking such a dangerous and difficult prey, they are very aggressive in battle and when meeting with any other creature including their own kind.)
CHANGES FROM REAL D&D CREATURE I MADE: I made their petrifying ability a lot slower so they aren’t the same as Medusa. They are often kept as pets by Medusa which are immune to their powers and which enjoy the creatures hostility.
VARIANTS: Pyrolisk (second picture)
==============================
PYROLISK
LEVEL: 11 (out of 35 possible)
TYPE: Dragon
SIZE: Medium
ENVIRONMENT: Volcanic (Earth)
SPECIAL POWERS and ABILITIES:
- Fiery Gaze (Meeting the gaze of a Pyrolisk means you spontaneously are wrapped in flames and your skin sets flame.)
- Burning Scratch (Being scratched by the vile Pyrolisk is a very unpleasant feeling as the wounds will burn into the flesh and hurt forever if not healed.)
- Extremely Aggressive (While very small, little predators take a risk of attacking such a dangerous and difficult prey, they are very aggressive in battle and when meeting with any other creature including their own kind.)
- Pyrotechnics (Natural fire becomes brighter, hotter and more intense when a Pyrolisk is near, some campfires for example explode into a violent flame pillar when a Pyrolisk draws near. Fire behaves pretty random and hostile when the Pyrolisk is around.)
CHANGES FROM REAL D&D CREATURE I MADE: These are dragon relatives of the Cockatrice. I gave them a lot more interesting abilities with fire as the normal Pyrolisk only had the Burning Scratch ability if I’m not wrong.
Advanced Dungeons and Dragons Project: #16 Cockatrice
Piece 16: The cockatrice
Surprisingly little information was provided for the cockatrice. I wonder if Gary Gygax (co- creator of the D&D universe) just assumed the players would do their own research. Historically, the myth of the cockatrice is that a cockatrice is based on medieval alchemical folklore, which believed they came from a snake or a toad hatching a rooster's egg. And some versions of the monster call it a basilisk. Interesting to note that both the basilisk and cockatrice have the ability to petrify (as in turn to stone) other animals. So there’s that helpful bit of information.
In the AD&D universe, it is somehow related to the pyrolisk too. Part chicken (head), part bat (wings) and part lizard (tail).
