Today on People You Should Know:: Hugh Thompson
Why you should know him:: Ended the My Lai massacre
The My Lai massacre (March 16th, 1968) was the systematic killing of Vietnamese civilians - grandparents, mothers, children, and babies - by U.S soldiers in Tịnh Khê, Quảng Ngãi province, Vietnam.
By the time Hugh Thompson (U.S helicopter pilot) intervened, 504 Vietnamese villagers had been killed (though the U.S Army reported only 347 dead). He and his crew, Glenn Andreotta and Lawrence Colburn, were flying to assist the troops in finding Viet Cong fighters but the sheer number of bodies on the road - clearly dead - caught their attention. During an interview Hugh said, “We started thinking what might have happened, but you didn’t want to accept that thought — because if you accepted it, that means your own fellow Americans, people you were there to protect, were doing something very evil.”
They were then able to see a group of civilians hiding in a bunker and quickly headed in their direction: American soldiers. “I just figured it was time to do something,” Hugh said. Decision made he landed his helicopter between the Vietnamese people and the approaching soldiers. After telling Glenn and Lawrence to cover him, Hugh jumped out and went to confront the armed men. He declared that if they opened fire on the civilians in the bunker, he and the two men with him would open fire on them. The threat enough to stop the soldiers from advancing any further.
Afterwards Hugh Thompson filed a complaint back at his base but nothing ever came of it. The U.S Army, to nobody’s surprise, tried to cover it up. They ultimately failed as the story of the My Lai massacre was eventually uncovered by journalist Seymour Hersh - who went on to publish an article that made worldwide news and caused a turning point in the war. Upon which Lt. William Calley, the commanding officer during the massacre, was put on trial where Hugh testified. Unfortunately his testimony didn’t go over well and along with finding little support, he faced backlash and harassment.
It took 30 years for the U.S Army to admit that he had done something good and in 1998 they awarded him the Soldier’s Medal for “heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy.”
