Children, once upon a time there was enough hype around a CD-ROM game to inspire a fully produced parody version starring John Goodman as the “King of the Game”. Inexplicably, this King would sing a song when the game was completed.
Twenty years is a long time, children.
Well, I found it. The most excruciatingly odd and indefensible piece of literal garbage committed to CD-ROM. Hacked together by Terry Gilliam wannabes, the only interesting part is John Goodman inexplicably “brushing his kitties”.
Martha Elen with debut single 'Canu Cloch' Out now via I KA CHING
Mae’n bleser gan Recordiau I KA CHING groesawu artist newydd sbon ar y label, sef Martha Elen. Bydd ei sengl gyntaf – Canu Cloch – allan nawr ar gwasanaethau frydio
Yn wreiddiol o'r Felinheli, mae magwraeth Martha Elen ar lannau'r Fenai yn ddylanwad sy'n llifo'n gyson drwy ei geiriau. Yn cyfuno gweadau cynnil gwerin-americana gyda haenau lleisiol ac alawon bachog alt-pop, mae lle i ganfod cysur rhywle rhwng y dwys a'r ysgafn yn ei chaneuon. Daw'r traciau atmosfferig a'r elfennau americana o gydweithio gyda'r cerddorion Gethin Elis, Iestyn Jones (y ddau yn aelodau o'r band WRKHOUSE), a Samantha Grace. Er yn troedio i diroedd newydd yn cyhoeddi cerddoriaeth, mae Martha Elen yn gwahodd gwrandawyr i ddod o hyd i deimlad cyfarwydd ymhlith offeryniaeth dyner a’r delweddau daearol.
Mae Canu Cloch yn drac llawn geiriau mewnsyllgar, teimladwy sy’n plethu sŵn ysgafn, acwstig gyda gweadau moethus gwerin-americana. Gwraidd y gân yma oedd y teitl, ac mae’n chwarae gyda’r teimlad anghysurus ddaw wrth anghofio.
“Dechreuodd y gân hefo’r riff syml ar y gitâr a thyfu o fanno yn weddol sydyn”, meddai Martha. “Ma na siâp i’r gân lle ma’n drymach erbyn y gytgan cyn eistedd yn nôl yn nhawelwch yr acwstig a’r llais erbyn y diwedd, ar ôl i’r storm basio.”
“Mae delwedda’ o’r môr yn aml yn ffeindio’u ffordd i mhen pan dwi’n sgwennu - ma raid bod byw wrth y Fenai’n deud arnai”.
Mae’r offeryniaeth yn agos iawn at fod yn drac cwbl fyw, gan drosglwyddo’r un teimlad gwreiddiol, naturiol a geir yn aml mewn caneuon americana, tra hefyd yn defnyddio elfennau alt-pop yn yr haenau lleisiol.
I KA CHING Records is delighted to welcome a brand-new artist to the label in Martha Elen, as her debut single, Canu Cloch, is out now on streaming platforms.
Emerging from Y Felinheli in North Wales, Martha Elen blends rich textures and emotive storytelling of folk-Americana with infectious alt-pop melodies. Hailing from Eryri, her tracks float between light and heavy, creating a unique, serene soundscape.
The intricate instrumentation and Americana elements are brought to life through collaboration, with musicians Gethin Elis, Iestyn Jones (both members of the band WRKHOUSE), and Samantha Grace all featuring on the track. Although stepping into new territory in releasing music, Martha Elen's tracks invite its listeners to find familiarity and comfort within its introspective lyrics, binding both the earthy and the ethereal.
Canu Cloch is a track full of introspective, moving lyrics that weave a light, acoustic sound with luxurious folk-Americana textures. The song stems from its title (translated as 'Ring a Bell') and plays on the uncomfortable feeling of forgetting something or someone.
Martha says, "The song started with a simple riff on the guitar and grew quickly from there. The song is shaped by its chorus, before sitting back in the silence and delicacy of the voice by the end, after the storm has passed. Images of the sea often find their way to my head when I'm writing - living by the Menai must have taken its toll."
Martha Elen's upcoming gigs include Sesiwn Fawr Dolgellau and the Eisteddfod Genedlaethol in Wrexham.
