The official royal family instagram shared the above photo and it made me realize what doesn’t work for me about the women’s outfits!
Charles and Anne are dressed like George VI and then-Princess Elizabeth, respectively… but none of the other women are referencing the Queen Mum or Margaret’s outfits!
I’d have put Charlotte in something akin to Margaret’s outfit. I like Camilla’s outfit, and think hers photographed best on the balcony, but would have encouraged her to wear a dress + open coat like the Queen Mum, to emphasize the continuity of the monarchy. Sophie and Kate needed vintage-looking styles that are a twist from their usual coatdresses. This was the moment for Kate to pull out an Alessandra Rich dress (perhaps the navy one worn to Bletchley Park?) and Sophie to go for a 50s circle skirt.
If nothing else, the ladies should have coordinated to wear patriotic red, white, and blue.
