Hari itu saya dan adik angkatan menaiki sepeda motor melaju menuju pasar yang tak jauh dari rumah kami. Tujuannya bukan untuk belanja, tapi untuk mencari dana kegiatan kampus. Di tengah perjalanan saya katakan padanya.
"Aduh dek, pegel banget nih rasanya. Padahal baru juga setengah perjalanan." Ucap saya yang berusaha mengambil posisi yang nyaman di boncengannya.
Ia yang sedang fokus mengemudi menimpali.
"Apalagi yang nyetir teh."
Deg. Saya langsung diam dan mengiyakan dalam hati.
"iya juga ya. Kalo mau ngeluh harusnya adik angkatan saya yang ngeluh duluan."
Akhirnya pikiran saya berkelana.
Dalam kehidupan kita, sering tak kita sadari bahwa ternyata di balik keluhan kita terhadap suatu kondisi yang kita anggap melelahkan ada orang lain yang merasakan situasi yang lebih sulit dari kita. Tapi mereka tetap diam, tenang, seolah-olah tak terjadi apa-apa. Menikmati semuanya. Sementara kita sibuk membuang energi untuk mengeluh.
Dari sana saya belajar lagi tentang cara menguatkan syukur dan meluaskan sabar. Sungguh benar bahwa semua perkara mukmin adalah baik lantaran Allah menjadikan rasa syukur dan sabar untuk menghiasi jiwa hambaNya terhadap situasi yang menimpanya. Sabarlah wahai diri, dan bersyukurlah dalam segala situasi.

Funeral Parade of Roses (薔薇の葬列 Bara no Sōretsu) (1969) is an incredible piece of queer cinema history. This Japanese New Wave film has a cast of transwomen (referred to as “gay boys,” but they live as women and would fit under the modern umbrella definition of transgender) and their male lovers. Not only that, but as a New Wave film, Funeral Parade of Roses does a bunch of crazy shit that should make it noteworthy on its own. It’s out of chronological order and there are bizarre film techniques. Although there is a story, the film prioritizes feeling over understanding. Experience over narrative. The story, however, does have some big shocks. Like Knife+Heart, I would call this film an emotional rollercoaster with sharp turns between laughs, gasps, and maybe some tears.
Occasional cuts to behind the scenes footage and interviews with the cast also make it a sort of documentary about the “gay boy” lifestyle with questions like, “how long have you been a gay boy?” and “why do you like it?” It feels like the filmmakers are genuinely interested in and sympathetic to trans identities and not just exploiting them.
I want to own a copy of this film. I want to watch it once a year and steal ideas from it. Also the main character, Eddie, is an absolutely fabulous heartthrob.
