A Thought on Dragons' Hoards...
Writing this down partially to share and partially so I won’t forget it…
Alright so I have this old story I was working on a while back where the main characters are dragons…
I do some pretty unconventional crap with dragons because, let’s face it, some things don’t make a lot of sense. And some things are just cool. I like cool stuff.
So I’ve never liked the dragons-hoard-treasure idea. What on earth use does the dragon have for human artifacts and coins and gems and all that? They can’t eat them. Yeah there’s the crowlike fascination with shiny stuff but that doesn’t really make a lot of sense… dragons’ hoards are supposed to be massive. So in my story (which I wrote when I was like… 13 by the way so yeah it needs a revamp) the main dragon race weren’t hoarders… but then I had a thought.
You know how humans buy weird little items they have no use for, on vacations or wherever, just for the memories? Well what if dragons did the same thing… except they are able to literally imbue an object with a memory (or two or more, depending on the size of the object) and then the memory stays in there for as long as the object exists unchanged? Then they could just touch the object to relive the memory. This would allow dragons who live around 14 or 15 centuries to remember at least parts of their whole lives (imagine how cluttered one’s head would get if all those memories stayed in there) and maybe even share memories directly with other dragons.
This also makes their tendency to hoard precious things make sense because gold and jewels could remain untarnished and undamaged for a very, very long time, hopefully as long as the dragon is alive and even after if nothing happens. Not to mention there’s just the aesthetic effect of all that shiny!
Yes, this idea. I like this idea :3
