Freddie Mercury: A fucking queer POC icon! A goddamn queer and brown legend, and musical genius! Bohemian Rhapsody is a freaking masterpiece and Rami Malek knocked it out of the goddamn park! EVERYONE needs to watch this freaking movie! This movie is so damn important, especially for the QPOC community! Freddie is the icon we have always deserved! This movie is the masterpiece we have always deserved!
When people say they want more diverse representation, they also mean they want nuanced characters, not the cookie-cutter token queer, religious, poc, or disabled character we have seen so often. I get that in the YA genre every basic female protagonist is the same but that shit isn’t appealing either, so give us nuanced characters!
i know it may just be cause it’s 4am and my diet consists primarily of candy and juice, but thinking about going to med school and being a doctor as a queer black person is literally giving me heart palpitations
side question: does anyone know of any sort of professional networks for lgbt people or poc in stem?
Initially it was announced LA LA LAND was the winner, by Warren Beatty, but this was incorrect, he was reading the wrong card (he had been handed the previous winner’s envelope – for Emma Stone’s La La Land victory). I honestly feel for all the cast and crew of LA LA LAND but my queer heart is so happy for Moonlight.
My part two of day one for @originalficfest‘s fiction fest. So here, I’m just going to go over the two main characters for this project. (Immortality Keys Characters)
Vyn Montellia
Roles/Alignment: Protagonist, POV/True Good
Quote: “I want to explore. I was never meant to keep my feet on a planet for longer than it takes to resupply a spacecraft.”
Description: Vyn only puts the people he cares for before his dream of becoming an expeditionist.
Random Fact: He’s never been to Earth.
Reason the Author Likes Them: I share Vyn’s love for space.
Aeliel
Roles/Alignment: Love Interest, grey character/True Neutral
Quote: “We Astrosirens were born from solar flares, yet your kind shy away from the power. How could someone like you be compatible with me?”
Description: One of a handful of male Astrosirens in the flock. He doesn’t oppose the customs of the group he’s with, but he doesn’t necessarily think he should partake and is distant from many. Although, he loves exploring.
Random Fact: His design is based off of a blue star.
Reason the Author Likes Them: While I’m not 100% obsessed with mermaids, I do have a thing for space. So the combination of those two things is bound to be awesome.
I figured it would be best if I did reviews by month, simply because I think it’ll be easier for me to write shorter reviews rather than the several paragraph essays I’ve been trying to write. Of course, all of the books I’ve read over the month will be included here. Let me know if you want me to read anything in particular! Also, I’ll include all relevant links (Amazon pages embedded in the book title, tumblrs following the author’s name if I know of them) with every book review!
Autoboyography by Christina Lauren: I usually dislike mlm novels written by women, but this is one of the exceptions. I adored the story, the chemistry between the leads, and how well emotions are conveyed. Honestly it’s a bit of an emotional roller coaster, and it holds your heart and you aren’t sure until the last page if it’ll crush you or warm you. If the synopsis is your speed, I recommend it!
Republic’s Chosen by Rori I (@aftertheworldends): This was a very interesting military sci-fi, and I adored the characters, they all had distinct personalities, and the story arcs were compelling. I highly recommend this book, so much so I gave it to a friend of mine to read immediately after I finished it.
Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz: I really liked this book, powering through the entire thing in a day. Ari’s perspective is interesting, and I really do like how real the relationship he and Dante have. My only hang up was the amount of drug and alcohol use in it, which is just a personal preference. Definitely give it a read!
Runebinder by Alex R. Kahler: Hooooooooooooooooh my god, this was an emotional roller coaster and it was so good! (Real quick, special call out, I mean shout out, to @squirrel-princess for torturing, I mean blessing me with this book recommendation!) It’s a post apocalyptic YA Fantasy with magic, demons, and a queer protagonist, which you know I’m all for! The sequel comes out in November, and I honestly am so excited to get it!
