Description
In George Hitchcock’s unusual presentation of the Annunciation, the virgin is depicted as a Dutch peasant girl standing in a field of lilies. Traditionally, the lily is a symbol of the angel Gabriel, and Mary’s downcast eyes and humble stance imply that she has received his divine message.

Description
The portrait of Madame de Maintenon was painted by Pierre Mignard around 1694. She depicted herself as Saint Francesca Romana, her patron saint. The open book she holds was written by the saint, and the passage inscribed in gold letters indicates the miraculous divine approval. The hourglass refers to the speed with which the saint followed God's commandments. The golden light in the upper left corner of the composition discreetly evokes the fulfillment of the miracle. The colors (blue and gold) and the richness of her dress likely allude to her marriage to Louis XIV in 1683. The hand placed on her chest signifies the sincerity of the saint's religious commitment.
Françoise d'Aubigné was a French noblewoman and the second wife of Louis XIV of France from 1683 until his death in 1715. Although she was never considered queen of France, as the marriage was carried out in secret, Madame de Maintenon had considerable political influence as one of the King's closest advisers and the governess of the royal children.
How do you think they could successfully write a Jedi-focused story revolving around religious faith?
Considering that the Jedi are supposed to be monks and their philosophy is heavily inspired by real-world Buddhist, Taoist and to a lesser extent Christian teachings, it’s kind of surprising we haven’t gotten a story that positively showcases religious faith from a Jedi’s perspective. The closest we’ve come to that has been with the Path of the Open Hand in the second phase of The High Republic, and that was more of a case of exploring the dangers of cult mindsets and religious extremism rather than exploring faith from a positive perspective.

the first time i saw a gender fluid character was alex in the magnus chase books (which i only read last year) and at the time i didn’t realise that i’d found the way to explain how i felt, but when i reread the books (very recently) i felt a massive sense of realisation and relief
i can’t remember the first time i saw a bi/ queer person? it might have been glee, but i genuinely don’t remember, but the most significant time that’s stuck in my brain that i count as the first ish was a show my mum watched when i was about eleven/ twelve (and at this point i Definitly had a crush on my best friend that i wasn’t acknowledging) and i can’t for the life of me remember what it was called but there was a bi woman in it and she hit All the stereotypes of bi/pan woman, with the “more likely to cheat” “has threesomes” “is really promiscuous”. anyway, all i remember is sitting there watching the show and feeling so uncomfortable, and my heart kind of sank
probably the first time i saw good bi rep? i honestly don’t know but what’s popping into my head is red white and royal blue, which definitely wasn’t the first because, again, i read it in the last year (maybe i just have a shitty memory) but anyway alex and nora that’s pretty much all i have to say the whole book made me feel more comfortable about myself (there seems to be an ongoing theme with me and fictional alex’s? i’ll unpack That later)
the first time might actually have been legend of korra? i’m not sure but the casualness of the korrasami relationship and the way it developed naturally (and the show makers didn’t kill either of them off cough cough every show ever) and it was shown as a healthy relationship? yes!

When people say they want more diverse representation, they also mean they want nuanced characters, not the cookie-cutter token queer, religious, poc, or disabled character we have seen so often. I get that in the YA genre every basic female protagonist is the same but that shit isn’t appealing either, so give us nuanced characters!
I've recently been binge-watching Fringe for the first time. It's a series about the "Fringe" division of the FBI, where Agent Olivia Dunham and her team investigate strange and paranormal events, visit parallel universes, and save the day by being smart and badass. I honestly can't believe it's taken me this long to get into a show that's three parts X-Files and one part NCIS. I found myself most intrigued by a strange one-off episode during Season 2 that was actually filmed in Season 1, but aired out of order on a different night for boring, time constraints reasons. Fans aren't even certain exactly where it fits in the show's timeline. It's called "Unearthed," and was panned by a lot of critics.
But this rather bad episode succeeds at one thing: giving its audience portrayal of a real religion that isn't wildly offensive or inaccurate. It does a great job giving us a small window into what Catholicism looks like today. Catholicism pops up all the time in science fiction, maybe because its trappings are easily identifiable for audiences. I'm happy to see a show get a lot of the details right, even though it's tucked away in an episode no one really cares about. The most shocking thing to me is that the narrative doesn't make these characters into perfectly good Catholics, either. They're much more real than what I'm used to seeing.
