So despite reading more than usual, I haven’t necessarily been enjoying it as much or getting into books as much. I’ve been using my time off most of my usual work as an opportunity to whittle down the tbr list. However, lockdown does creep up on you mentally, and I’ve been reading a lot of darker or heavier books recently.

Sometimes you just find the book you really needed at that moment, and it turns out reading some more Pratchett was 100% what I needed. It’s so sharp and clever and funny and insightful and twisty and imaginative and dark and poignant. I’m yet to read some Pratchett I don’t like

Nostalgia and quarantine boredom has me reading the old Roswell tie-in books, where I found this little relatable gem.

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. It’s been sitting on my tbr list for ages, and I finally borrowed it on Libby. Probably not the best to read in ebook format, but actually more compelling than I expected

Effectively swallowed this in a couple of days. Collins does enough to draw you in and have you invested in the characters, so you come for the mystery and stay for the conclusion

A re-read of this for the first time since I was in high school (dystopia perhaps not the best reading in a lockdown situation 🤦‍♀️). It’s interesting to see how much more I related this to the world around me, although the same sense of unease I felt the first time was still there- teenage me just had less life experience to colour my reading.

This was difficult to get into- the author’s writing style is so uber-descriptive that even the most exciting scenes end up dragging

A tad predictable, but ultimately gripping and fascinating. I think the important thing for anyone reading this is to accept that these are different voices telling the story. It's hard not to compare Offred's reflective, easily side-tracked voice with the clearer voices of the three women in this. The aim of this novel is different, and is as much about fan service as anything else- Atwood was asked questions, so she answered them.
