One Dark Throne
“The battle for the crown has begun, but which of the three sisters will prevail?
With the unforgettable events of the quickening behind them and the Ascension Year underway, all bets are off. Katharine, once the weak and feeble sister, is stronger than ever before. Arsinoe, after discovering the truth about her powers, needs to figure out how to make her secret talent work in her favor without anyone finding out. And Mirabella, the elemental sister thought to be the certain Queen Crowned, faces attacks that puts those around her in danger she can’t seem to prevent,” (Kendare Blake).
I enjoyed Kendare Blake’s One Dark Throne because it was fast-paced. I also appreciated the twists that occurred throughout the novel’s length and the fact that Blake took some time to develop each of the sisters, giving each a more distinct personality. With that being said, I felt as though the Queen’s personalities remained simplistic and one-dimensional. I also thought it strange that everyone in the novel talked in a similar fashion despite their differing ages and upbringing. Furthermore, I felt as though the prose remained simplistic and weak—it was not particularly detailed and did not flow particularly well. However, the story itself made up for this shortcoming. Finally, I would have liked to see more descriptive combat/fight scenes. I felt as though Blake chose not to do any research on the weapons being used in the novel, which resulted in blander, less engaging fight scenes. Even so, I felt as though this novel was stronger than the first in the series.
