One Step Up, Two Steps Back - Chapter 1
(This is a little something I wrote for @knightofhell-cami a while back. It’s a series, but I’m just now sharing, but if it gets good enough reviews I’ll continue :) send me a message or reblog if you enjoyed it and I’ll decide if I’d like to continue posting) ———————————————— Castiel. Cas. Cassie. Baby. Sweetheart. Babe. Boyfriend. Husband. Missing. Dead.
On some days, Dean never accepted it. He woke up each morning, expecting Cas to be there beside him. Sometimes, he stayed in bed a moment after waking up, waiting for Cas to bring him bed in breakfast or his usual cup of coffee.
On other days, he lied in bed all day, tears falling from his eyes and onto the pillow. He wondered if maybe Cas never went missing and had just left him, without a single goodbye or, “I’ll miss you.” He wondered if there was anything he could have done to prevent this, like locking the window like he’d forgotten to the night he went missing…
Today was one of the days where he didn’t feel anything. He got up, made himself some coffee, took a shower, got dressed, and went to work. He followed the rules and did his work without a single question, dead husband or no. No one cared about his husband anymore, aside from him. It had been too long.
He was a cop that normally went undercover to “buy” drugs from dealers, only to have them arrested later. But he had helped on the search for his husbands body. They hadn’t found shit, aside from the silly locket Cas had always worn around his neck, with a picture from his and Dean’s wedding inside. And that didn’t help much.
Dean now wore that locket, and sitting inside his car with his partner beside him, he opened it up and looked at it.
“Still haven’t let him go yet, Winchester?” His partner asked, and Dean closed the locket before turning to look out of the window. “Would you?” “Huh?” “If someone you loved went missing and you had no idea where the hell they were, or whether they were alive or not, would you let them go?” “Uh…eventually, yeah. I guess.” “Yeah. You guess.”
They drove past a man standing in the road, a pink bunny rabbit in his hand, spinning around in a circle. The car came to a stop, and his partner said, “Oh, this is going to be fun,” before they got out.
———————————– Crash!
“Dean.” Cas quickly sat up in bed, shaking Dean awake. “I think someone is in the house.” Another loud crash sounded from downstairs, and Dean quickly stood up, grabbing the biggest book from their bookshelf. “Stay here.” He told Cas, but when he went to leave, Cas grabbed his arm.
“Please be careful.”
Dean nodded, gave him a quick kiss on the forehead, and went downstairs. No one was there.
But when he went back upstairs, Cas wasn’t there either.
———————————–
Bath salts. Dean knew it was bath salts as soon as he got close to the guy. He was drooling like crazy, having soaked his shirt with his own slobber. He and his partner pulled their guns out.
“Get down on the ground!” Dean shouted.
It was silly having to say this to drugged up people when you knew they wouldn’t understand, but it was protocol.
The man didn’t get down on the ground, but stopped to look at him. Drool was still pouring from his hanging bottom lip.
“Get down on the ground, now!” Dean shouted again.
He didn’t move yet again, and his partner stepped forward to grab the man’s arm, but he swung his arm and hit him in the side. Dean pulled his taser out, shocked him, and he fell to the ground in a wet, sweaty, slobbery mess.
They got the man into the back of their car and drove him to the police station, where they kept him in a holding cell until the drugs wore off and they could talk to him.
“Did he have any other possessions on him?” Dean asked, and his partner went to keep an eye on the man, making sure he wasn’t going to try anything.
“Uh…a pink bunny, a pocket knife, house keys, and a picture.” Another officer said, handing him the man’s possessions bag.
Dean examined it a little, when his eyes landed on the picture. He froze, and a choked noise came from his throat.
It was him. His Cas. His real, alive, Castiel. His husband!
He was in a picture with a group of other people Dean had never seen before, a green and white sign behind them that read, “Green Mountain Boys Bar. Famous For Ale!”
Cas never had a job there.
He was wearing a blue button up shirt with a black shirt underneath, jeans, and had a Green Mountain Boys Bar hat on. He had his wedding ring on, Dean could tell, but it was on the wrong hand. He was smiling brightly. He was happy.
The man they had arrested was in the picture too, which explained why he had it. He must work there. Cas must work there.
“Dean? You okay?” Someone asked, and Dean looked up at them before he fell to the ground unconscious.
