let me speak honestly about heated rivalry for a moment. not just how good the show is, how happy and giddy it makes me, how obsessed with those little gay men i am. but how important it is, especially right now.

episode 5 is THE top rated episode of television of literally all time. it is undeniable that this show, which was filmed in a little over a month, which was not expected to be anywhere near the level of popular it is, has skyrocketed to astronomical fame. and not only is it a fun show, but it is GOOD. good writing, good cinematography, good chemistry, good world building, good character depth, good soundtrack, good casting. things like this are subjective, but a 10/10 episode is pretty hard to come by.

my point being, it is incredibly important right now, where there is so much fear, so much hatred being pushed upon queer people, where they are made to feel less than and othered in social and political spaces, it speaks absolute volumes that the biggest show in the world right now is about a wasian gay autistic man falling in love with a russian bisexual man. it’s proof, to our community and to the world, that love does so much more than fear. that good television is made even better by representation. that depicting queer relationships, multiple queer relationships, with nuance and care, showing them fuck and fight and fall in love and live as real, competent, complex people, is worth it. it’s worth giving us representation, because it will pay off. and heated rivalry has proved that.

maybe i’m just bitter in the wake of stranger things season 5 volume 2, or maybe i’m just bitter from years of being queerbaited and used as playthings by sherlock, supernatural, house, community, teen wolf, friends, riverdale, glee, wednesday, harry potter. maybe i’m just bitter about the fact that our community has been used and ignored for decades. but it makes me so happy, so, so happy, to see a show about men falling in love extend beyond our community, and prove that queer representation does wonders more than queerbaiting any day.

How do fans engage with the source material when there’s already canonical queer representation?

Rachel Marks looks at the fandoms for the DC Comics TV shows (like Flash, Supergirl, Arrow, and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow), which have been including queer characters since 2014 when the characters Sara Lance and Nyssa al Ghul shared a kiss in Arrow. Marks finds:

Fans generally appreciate and care about queer representation in Legends, but they often overlook representation of people of color. For instance, pairings with characters of color get less attention.

Canon queer pairings get the most attention, but noncanonical pairings are still common.

“In sum, Legends fans show their appreciation for canon queer representation in television by frequently featuring canonically queer characters in their posts, highlighting the positive qualities of those characters and their relationships. Fans appreciate seeing multiple LGBT characters represented on television and get enjoyment out of seeing same-sex couples being couples on screen. However, this is not all they focus on when blogging or writing fic about their favorite characters or ships. Fans want to enjoy viewing canonically queer couples and queer characters on television, but they also want to enjoy alternative interpretations in which noncanonical ships are read for their subtextual elements. Fans simultaneously enjoy watching and creating content about a show that has canonical queer representation, while continuing the queer fan tradition of forming their own interpretations of queer characters and relationships.”

i love being the elder trans in my friend group. like i am in no way more mature or older than these people but i have been an active part of the queer (and specifically trans) community the longest and am very very out and proud. when asked for name idea resources i sent a whole damn spreadsheet. when asked where one could subtly get a binder i handed over two that i didnt fit into anymore, and told them if they didnt fit to pass it along. when asked how to make more queer friends i wrote a whole essay in response. younger kids from my school randomly come out to me because i guess they see me and go 'ah yes they will accept me' and im like hell yeah dude im proud of you.

i love being part of the queer support system in my community <3

i think im hesitant to be friends with people who arent queer because im very scared theyll secretly hate me for being different than them or think that theyre above me and even if theyre not the fear of that in the back of my mind will always be there a little bit. im very scared of being othered or made different or made to feel less than, and this has happened to me before, being friends with a straight cis person who acted very clearly like she was better than me because i wasnt "normal" like her.

curious if other people feel this too or if im just paranoid lol
