“Flipped Narrative”
Ryan Young
2020.
Kept thinking about this sign and wanting to start working with neon. Created this other image as a flipped narrative. It’s always interesting to see folks’ reactions to work that reverses the oppressed’s narrative onto the oppressor. Especially when in reality one of these was an actual sign that used to hang in restaurants and other establishments.
Hey my natives, as you may know Trans Day of Remembrance is coming up.
And although traditionally many of our tribes/nations celebrated and respected the Two Spirit, we know thats not the case for many of us today, and two spirit folks are often ostracized by their tribes, ridiculed, harrassed, and yes, even murdered. Many of us forget this, two spirit folks, especially trans women, are some of the highest to be targeted and murdered on our reservations and elsewhere by their own people and by non natives alike.
SO TO MY NATIVE TWO SPIRITS
I love you, i respect you. I know our ancestral and traditional roles. The Great Spirit hasn't forgotten us, and through ceremony, education, healing, and medicine, our people will soon relearn our roles again too.
PLEASE, if you know the term for Two Spirit/queer in your language, reblog and comment, so that the honorable names of our kind and our roles are uplifted, remembered, and spoken.
Falling doesn’t feel so bad when I know you’ve fallen this way too.
