Y’all, I understand people calling out that “they” is already used as singular in English, when talking about people using it as their pronouns, but like... SO WHAT IF IT WASN’T?

In portuguese we literally do not have a way to communicate neutral gender with pronouns, when using adjectives, anything (the standard is to use the masculine version of words when aiming for “neutral”). We are having to go through ridicule when talking about using “e” at the end of adjectives and stuff, instead of “a” or “o”, and using totally new pronouns.

Discourse online is very much “English language centric”, because as a rule of thumb we use English to communicate internationally, so those aspects of the trans enby/ people who want to use they pronouns tend to go unnoticed, but for a lot of languages (especially those rooted in latin) the “made up” stuff is necessary to accommodate queer people. That doesn’t make it less valid, just cause “it’s not a part of the language originally”.
