Sup! So I’m new to the punk thing, so if it’s alright with ya, can u help me get familiar with the punk lifestyle? I really want to know more about it! (Btw I’m also left-leaning! Even before I get into this!)

If you ask someone what the punk lifestyle means, you’re going to get a different answer every time.

Some people are going to point you straight to the music the culture formed around. Sex Pistols, Dead Kennedys, The Clash, Ramones, Green Day, etc.

Other people are going to go straight to fashion. DIY accessories, worn out clothes, crust pants and battle jackets, wild hair styles and lots of piercings.

Several will point right towards political theory. Collective Action, Riots, Anarchy, Community, anything that means standing up to the man and fighting facism.

Each of these are important to punk, but none of them are punk on their own. Punk is a lifestyle, a subculture that places importance on the expression of the individual and the protection of the community at the same time.

Want to be punk? Be yourself, stand up against those who would dare to oppress others, and have fun while you do it.
