QUEERSTRALIA (2022) Episode 1 dir. Stamatia Maroupas
Join award-winning comedian and professional lesbian Zoe Coombs Marr, as we wipe away the straightwashing and reveal the untold and frankly
HIGHLY recommend Queerstralia on ABC for those interested in Australian queer history and experiences! It’s well-made and very aware of intersections with race, gender, colonisation, etc. with a range of interviews from members of the queer community here. I feel like most popular posts around pride and queer history are very US-centric so a lot of this was new info for me to learn.

QUEERSTRALIA (2022) Episode 1
Okay so Dr Lilian Cooper was first woman medical doctor registered in Queensland. She lived with school pal Josephine Bedford. They now share a grave in Toowong Cemetery. In an article from the time their house is described as a "Woman's Nest".
Personally as a queer woman I love this descriptor for a household. As such. I made a door mat. Cat has opinions.

genuinely mean it to all you guys to please go and check out this series sometime. barely anyone really acknowledges australia exists that much, yet alone the queer history of it
Attention Aussie Tumblr Peeps (all 20 of you):
Go watch Queerstralia on ABC iview! It's a three-part documentary about queer history in Australia.
We are often fed narratives from elsewhere in the world, so this is a great way to learn about our unique history. It's funny, entertaining, and doesn't sanitise anything.
I learnt HEAPS.
I was also super impressed about how it is both inclusive yet balanced. It frequently checks its own privelage and also acknowledges the hierarchies within the greater lgbtqi+ community. The white lesbian host (Zoë Coombs Marr - total legend) enlisted another interviewer to discuss first nations topics, and I was FLOORED by the bit above about racial fetishisation. I have never felt so seen on Australian TV before. There was even a whole bit leading up to this about gay Arabs. Like what??
Good on ya Aunty :)
