Question mark cockroach
Have you seen the question-mark cockroach (Therea olegrandjeani)?
I have now
Yes, in photos/videos
Yes, irl
I'm not sure
Question mark cockroaches (Therea olegrandjeani) At Chester Zoo!
These aren't high quality images by any means, but I wanted to share them anyway because they're my favourite species and cockroaches get such a bad rep for being ugly :(
Frog! Forgot what species these guys were but they're certainly there 😌 They're a new addition to the zoo (since I last went a year or so ago, anyway) and I was being rushed so I didn't get much of a chance to read about them :(
Red panda!
Tulla, the potion teacher’s familiar. Messing with chemicals and stuff, and pretending to be entirely composed.
Tried my hand at digital. :P
Apologies if you don't like this week’s art!
I drew and then painted it one evening in my mum-in-law's lounge while we watched three episodes of The Crown back-to-back in Netflix one evening, just using an artists’ black pencil, a limited range of watercolour pencils and a waterbrush (a plastic brush holding water in a squeezy barrel).
I had my A5 sketch book on my knees and my phone holding the reference photo I'd taken at a zoo a few days earlier balanced on the arm of my chair, touching the screen each time the light in it faded and threatened to close the image from my gallery.
The Question Mark Cockroach originates from the state of Andhra Pradesh in south-eastern India but is far from hard to get hold of. I was shocked to see them being sold online by UK breeders and importers for £2 to £4 each, posted out by Royal Mail special delivery, which I can’t imagine is a happy experience for the cockroach! 😱
I hope this doesn't repulse you too much! For me, this creature made a surprisingly pleasant companion for my evening's TV.
If you’d like the unframed original (the left hand image, in case that’s not obvious), please just private message me and it’s yours for £25 (including UK postage), and I’ll frame it for you for an extra £10.
It’s also available to buy worldwide printed on all sorts of things at:

Chamo the question mark cockroach eats some nanner. She likes to burrow and hide under leaves and I rarely see her.
