The thing about beauty
is we've all been convinced since birth
that it has to do with how we look
that beauty is an image
particular
superficial
subjective
but real enough to rule our lives
if it were up to me
'you're beautiful' would be removed from
the list of word weapons
we use to slice into each other
I shouldn't have to be pretty
for you to value me
I shouldn't have to be visually appealing
to be granted the dignity I deserve
when someone has the audacity
to talk about me in terms of my appearance
they sure as hell
better know the soul inside
radiating love hope strength
despite the imperfect exterior
