I am going to have the last quilt top I made (the blue basket one I started in 1982 and finished in 2006- below) professionaly quilted (at last!) and bought muslin for the backing that is approx 108″ x 120″. After washing and drying it twice (knowing full well it will get creased after I fold it to transport it to the quilter) I decided that I really wanted to iron the dryer wrinkles and crinkles out - in my 3-room apartment. I ended up laying it on my queen-size bed and using my ironing board to press around the edges about 2 feet in, Then I folded it in half lengthwise and am steaming in right on the bed, using the matress pad like a pressing board. It has smoothed quite a bit out. I know that being put in the quilting frame and the rollers will help flatten it anyway, but I really wanted to get the ‘shrinkles’ out of it. No idea when the quilter will be able to fit me into her schedule, but I can bring her the backing and the batting almost any time until she gets me in her queue.
