Amigos perrunos en Quitumbe y Puerto Lopez, Ecuador // Doggie friends in Quitumbe, Quito and Puerto Lopez, Ecuador
The Midnight Bus
In a way we are all on the midnight bus. We--all of us--are on the last train home.
We were driving down the Andes mountains from Quito to the northern coast of Ecuador. Ours was one of the last to leave Quitumbe and go where we were going. It was dark, and we drove through fog as thick as clouds: only 25 kmh because the only indication of oncoming traffic were the highbeams piercing through the mist--no way to tell how close or far away we were, so we rely on break pads and luck.
We pass through small towns and villages on the way down. People outside are scattered like points on a plot, each giving a new meaning to nightlife. Some people stand on the roadsides with Arms raised hoping the bus will stop and pick them up; I wonder what it’s like to have hope like that, to stand on the side of the road and wait at three in the morning. Even as I think it, I know safety is not something easily considered outside the city. Here, security means something else.
The people outside of Quito are darker skinned. Their faces range from the smoothest browns to the darkest blacks. Moreno means more than just a casual sprinkling of color. And I see them only on the midnight bus winding farther and farther away from the city.
Bus to Bus
If you want to get to the Quitumbe or Rio Coca terminal in Quito from the new airport it's actually pretty easy. It was hard to find good info online, but it was easy to find the bus zone right outside the arrivals area and then it was only a matter of time before the bus we needed arrived. For two dollars we took the hour-long trip south to Quitumbe so we could continue our trip the rest of the way to Banos, our first stop in Ecuador.
