Number 22: Quoridor, designed by Mirko Marchesi and published by various. I ran out of time to post yesterday so will be posting my number 22 and 21 of my top 25 games I’ve discovered this year today! ⏳📦💭 Quoridor is a very simple to learn abstract movement game, in which you are tasked with the simple act of moving your pawn from your side of the board to you opponent’s side, all whilst your opponent is trying to do exactly the same. You have two choices each turn, you can either move your pawn one space either up, down, left or right along the squares OR place one wall anywhere on the board between the squares. Pawns cannot jump walls, so must move around them. The only rule with walls is that players cannot entirely block their opponent’s path, there must always be at least one gap to progress through. And that’s it, you now know how to play Quoridor! 📦⏳💭 There are two main elements to this game that immediately impressed me. Firstly, the obviously tactile nature of the game is sheer joy. The tough wooden board, the little wooden wall pieces, moving either the wooden pawn or slotting a wall between squares, it’s all a really nice feeling on each and every go. The second was a much simpler one... the limited walls. Now I know this is a pretty obvious design choice, but it’s really what makes the game so clever. It’s not just about blocking your opponent, because they will make it through eventually. It’s about slowing them down enough that you are able to race ahead. But, of course, they are trying to do the same, so it becomes a tense decision of using up a valuable wall, or pressing ahead with your pawn. It creates the kind of tense decision that always blows me away in ‘simple’ games. 📦⏳💭 I wasn’t surprised to fall in love with Quoridor. Despite being heavily into themed games, abstract designs remind me of all the clever things I love about game design, and this one really does deserve a place on this list!
