The under-statedness and subtlety of their private love would never be something forgotten between them - and, once public, they would not allow it, under any circumstances, to be misconstrued in any possible form. The couple would never let anything, especially the general public, to rob them of what they had shared for years.

It began with a private Chinese food feast shared alone in his dinky apartment, bustling city noises accompanying the burning fire of the five dollar log he had purchased for their intimate date. He had accomplished a deep clean of his place hours before her arrival, anxiously dusting and Swiffering every surface. His attempts to modify every part of his daily life, everything that made him who he is, deeply upset her.

“I know you’re not this way,” she casually told him over a bowl of shitty noodles, slurping one up quickly, “I’ve seen enough of you to know it. Don’t squash who you are because of me. We’re actors for a living, I can tell when you’re lying to me.”

Sheepish at her recognition of his dishonesty, his face scrunched and heated up, cheeks flushing as his voice went quiet, “I wanted it to be good for you.”

Over his tiny dinner table, one step shy of a TV dinner tray, she took his hand in hers, “You don’t have to try. It’s already good.”

His head dropped between his shoulders, elbows rested on the table, “...So you know I’m messy?”

She snorted as she took a swig of her Coke, “Yes. I’ve seen your mirror at the theatre. I know for a fact your place doesn’t normally look like this. There’s no way.”

He openly laughs at himself, looking back up at her, “Damn. I thought I was fooling you.”

“Everybody knows how messy you are,” she swears, “It’s okay. Next time I come over, though, I want this shit messy.”

“Alright,” he agrees, “I can do that. Done.”
