was thinking about all the posts about depressed!ryland grace and how most of them are talking about him on the hail mary but what about a grace who's incredibly depressed before the start of the book/film. who quit academia in an inflammatory way specifically to push people away, who likes dealing with the kids he teaches but doesn't have anything to go home to. as far as we know he has one friend (in the book) and they don't even see each other that often, and his family is never even mentioned. and then he gets roped into this whole mystery with alien life and suddenly he's excited, he's discovering things, people other than his students are listening to him, and then he's being asked to die. and for the first time in a long time he realizes he doesn't want to die. and they don't give him a choice.
