#rabbit advice

hello! I got a bunny a few days ago and im still quite anxious that I might do something wrong and am continually researching everything to double check its okay (even his ear positions...) so I was wondering if you have any tips for a first time owner and also to ask are spindle and nima cuddly? once my bun settles in a bit more id quite like to be able to cuddle with him

Absolutely! This is a bit broad a question, but I can give some general tips.

First, know that a rabbits diet is extremely important as their gut health is fragile. 80% of a rabbits diet should be hay. So feed your rabbit timothy, orchard, or meadow hay and that should be available at ALL times. If you feed pellets, I always recommend the brand Oxbow—you do not want to use brands that have molasses or a ton of weird fillers those are going to be bad for the gut.  And pellets should only be fed in 1/8 cup to ¼ cup amounts. Too much is bad for them it’s a dietary supplement to make sure they get enough calories. But more important than this is the hay. I also recommend putting the hay where the litter is and in the litter box, because they poop where they eat. Make sure the greens you feed your rabbit aren’t overwhelming the diet either. So id give ½ cup to 1 cup of greens daily.

Second, its really important that the litter box is bigger than the rabbit. Enough that the rabbit can comfortably lay down and turn around in it. I recommend stainless steel ones because they are easy to clean and don’t get crusty nearly as much. But plastic ones are fine too. Just the size matters. Litter should be unscented. Do not fall for the “odor killing” ones that have baking soda. Baking soda is very toxic and rabbits love to snack on their environment so its going to be harmful to them to eat it. I like to use treated pine pellets at the shelter we work at, and at home I use pelleted recycled paper.

Rabbits are prone to respiratory distress, so its important too that the area you have them in doesn’t have like candles or strong perfumes or any of that because they can get respiratory infections fast.

Theres honestly a lot of stuff that can be said about rabbits for first time owners so feel free to follow up with specific questions if needed. A major tip though is recording your rabbits breathing and behavior when its healthy, so that way if you think its distressed, you have a point of reference.

And ahhhh right. Spindle is cuddly, nima is not. Rabbits hate being picked up thats pretty universal, but spindle loves to just toddle over and boop my shoulder with his nose or flop next to me for pets. Nima would rather I be hurled into a ditch off the highway. it is what it is LOL

The dizzy look on the reader's/technician's face when they get jumpscared by the daycare attendants. Just the silliest face! Especially at the end when the reader/technician is walking away to give the children chocolate. The goofiest face after breaking Sun and Moon's heart XD

Intro Post

I'm basically just expanding on my Bio here. Read that for a TL;DR. Loooong post underneath, but there's categories for easy skimming

NAME: You can call me Rabbit! There's no meaning behind it, it's just my favorite animal. I heard rabbits are important to Irish Paganism, though, but I haven't done much research on it

CONTENT: I made this blog as a way to document my journey discovering my religion. I will also use this to store all my resources I find. I will have a tag for original posts (Rabbit Rambles) and links/re-posts meant for archival purposes (Rabbit steals). Because they're mostly for my own usage, I may not always have proper credit to give, but I will always provide links to where I found it. I know, I know, it's not the best practice, I'm sorry

WHY: I first began researching Irish Paganism because I headcanoned an Irish character in a fantasy book as pagan and I wanted to be accurate. (If you're wondering, it was Halt O'Carrick from Rangers Apprentice haha). As I did so, I slowly started realizing that I already believed in most the things listed, just in a non-religious way. And all the things I didn't already believe, I understood. And slowly, it felt less like hyper-fixation and more like faith. I'm still not certain in myself, but I'm trying things out to see how it feels. Figured it'd be the best way to know for sure.

INTERPRETATIONS: Because my main source for research is Wikipedia about ancient beliefs, I fully understand many of my beliefs and interpretations are probably wrong. I also don't fully believe in direct goddess work (yet, I'm slowly warming up to it), so that makes finding good resources even harder for me. I'm really trying my best, but I have school and chores, so for now, I think I'm okay with being wrong. For now. We'll see how long that lasts

ALTAR: I don't have an altar yet but I'm working on it. I connect most with Brigid, so she's who I'll be focusing on, but I think it's gonna end up fairly vague. I'm going to be making a shelf out of a giant log that fell from an oak tree in my backyard. (Side note - I have a bunch of stuff that I really like and want to put on the altar, but are technically things made for Persephone. Would Brigid by upset by this? I can't figure it out!)

MUSIC: I LOVE the Crow Women!!! I never see anyone talk about them but their music is genuinely so beautiful. I sing Song of Beltane to myself so often. Here's a link to my current playlist, it's very rudimentary but it makes me feel good, and that's what this is all about, right?

SIDE NOTES: Also, I am very obsessed with Persephone, but that's just a hyperfixation. That's actually one of the reasons I feel this might be my religion; because of how different the two things feel to me. A pet peeve of mine is when people treat Brigid and Persephone like they're the same goddess with different names when?? They're not?????

okay, so i have an almost 4 month old rabbit and i feel like i cant make any progress with bonding with her. originally she was in a very small play pen but i did my research and she now free roams my bedroom except for when im at school (im in college) and im never out all day. when im not home i keep her in her (much bigger now!) playpen with plenty of hay, water, pellets, chew toys and her bed. i try to cuddle with her when shes roaming and she wont have it. sometimes she'll be affectionate with me but then sometimes she'll become aggressive and bite and lunge at me for no reason. shes also extremely aggressive if i reach into her playpen for literally anything!! ive also tried to litter train her, i have the bumbox and am constantly cleaning up her poop and pee to try and get her to understand she needs to go in there instead, and her hay is right above her litterbox in a large hay bag. (i cant leave her hay in the litterbox because she's a digger.) in the couple months that i've had her i haven't been able to groom her or cut her nails at all because she wont let me and attacks me if i try. shes not quite old enough yet to be fixed, so im not sure what i can do about any of this behavior until i can get her spayed. i really love my bun and am not sure how i can bond with her more than this! any constructive!! criticism would be greatly appreciated, i want my bunny to love me :,(

So after having had my bun for a while it seemed appropriate to try and find him a longterm companion. I'm happy to be with him so much but it felt like he could get more out of having me and another rabbit around. Always a sucker for craigslist, I found a listing. Went to pick the new fella up. Hes a lionhead rabbit, 2 yrs old, easily as big as my cat, and the scaredest bab ever. Due to the size difference (bells a mini rex and about the size of a Kleenex box) they've not been bonded yet. they're both in my room in separate areas out of sight of eachother and if anyone has any advice for bonding rabbits I cant tell you how much I'd appreciate it. Thank you ♡

Doing us a MISTY MIST to try and stay cool in this horrific heat. You can also see Delilah’s current favourite method of staying cool, a chilled ceramic tile. I don’t think she’s decided yet if the indignity of being sprayed with water is worth it.

NEVER soak a rabbit! They have difficulty drying out fully and can become very ill from wet fur. Swimming or bathing is a BIG no-no. Run a wet cloth along their ears or lightly mist them at most.

Should rabbits spend some supervised time outside?

I've seen conflicting views on this. Some people say it provides excellent enrichment and they get fresh grass. Other people say the outdoors are too dangerous and predators like birds can frighten your house bunny, even if you keep them under close watch.

What do you think?
