I ran health checks at our shelter today! And everyone got a spa day.

First is this lovely head tilt survivor who got a sanitary shave, kisses, eye ointment and a cookie (well deserved!)

Then this sweet old man Ruby who just oinked wheezily at me as I cut his nails and he got a sanitary bum shave because he creaks around and pees himself sometimes. His scald is nonexistent since i started doing this though!

Marshal, AKA, Mister Marshal Honey Bunny Baby Boy.

Ive never owned a rabbit before-- im used to cats, dogs, and farm animals like chickens, horses, and goats. Caring for such a small, strictly herbivorous prey animal has been a new venture for me. Cats are my favorite, and obviously you CANNOT treat a rabbit like a cat (despite how cat-like I've seen Marshal to be). If i play with him the way i play with my cats, he'll actually have a stroke. And i also cant share little bits of roast beef from my sandwhich. I wasnt sure I'd connect with him at first, but he's so cute and very sassy and grown on me fast.

If you've watched Bojack, think of Princess Carolyn's arc with Ruthie (the porcupine baby, Untitled Princess Carolyn Project). Idrk know what im doing but he cracks me up. He's even starting to play with my cats which is really sweet, and i think he likes the company! He was alone a lot at his previous home, and the cats are well behaved-- enough.

Ive got the basics down-- hay is priority for feeding, appropriate fresh produce to round out nutrition, they have weak spines to be wary of, they need consistent grooming (currently in my first molt with Marshal), fresh water as for any critter. I have a kennel that i can put him in for some outside time, though I'd love to get a pen with more square feet. He was completely un-groomed when i got him, so I've already had to bathe him (yellow stained feet and boonky, i did not submerge him and i dried him properly) and clip his nails that were long enough to start twisting.

Other than that, im a noob and advice is welcome! I've noticed he doesnt really chew on anything so i worry about his teeth, but he loves his hay and i havent noticed any issues yet. Not sure how to encourage him.

To anyone looking at rabbits for Easter:

×Rabbits are not a "throwaway" pet. They can live 12-15 years if well taken care of

×Rabbits are not all "gentle." Sometimes they're fucking silly. Some are more active. Our boy and girl are polar opposites

× SPAY/NEUTER YOUR RABBIT, not only for breeding reasons, but cancer risks are EXTREMELY high

×Rabbits are VERY intelligent and need A LOT of interactive enrichment time

×Rabbits can take time to trust you, ESPECIALLY if they are rehomed to you. BE PATIENT WITH THEM

×Like human children, you must never strike a rabbit for being naughty. They're babies. Treat them like they are infants

×RABBITS ARE NOT TOYS or for small children

×RABBITS MUST BE FED Alfalfa hay for youngins, Timothy hay for adults, mixed vegetables, fruits, and pellets. DO NOT avoid any necessary part of their diet. It's cheap beyond the fresh stuff. Grow it if you can. That's what we do.

×Don't be stupid. They're a lot of work.

×Please don't feed a rabbit carrots in excess. That's a rare treat. They are too high in sugar. You will give your bunny heart issues.

Rabbits are one of the most common pets after dogs and cats. Despite this, few people know the ins and outs of their care. To help out, here's a fun little Q&A about rabbits: Q: What is the biggest rabbit breed? A: The Flemish Giant is the largest, ranging around 2.5-4 feet long and weighing up to 22 pounds. The record for the largest Flemish Giant was 50 pounds! Q: What is the smallest rabbit breed: A: The Netherland Dwarf is the smallest breed, with a max body length of about 9 inches and weighing between 2 and 2.5 pounds. Q: How high can rabbits jump? A: Most rabbits can easily scale 1 meter high, or 3 feet. In comparison, they can leap a distance of 10 feet in a single bound, reaching top speeds at about 35 miles per hour! Q: Can rabbits learn tricks? A: Yes! Rabbits are food motivated and able to learn various tricks, including run through a course like dog shows have. Q: Do rabbits actually like carrots? A: Most rabbits love carrots! And peas, anything that tickles their sweet tooth. But watch out, they're prone to obesity, and should only get these delights once or twice a week. Q: What are some things I might not know about rabbits? A: Some rabbit breeds have specific functions. Like sheep, angora rabbits produce wool, called angora wool. Every 3-4 months it is painlessly trimmed, plucked, or brushed away to be used for coats, mittens, and many other things! Trimming their coat keeps them from overheating in the summer, and often they will sit and nap while being trimmed. Removing the excess wool also prevents them from getting blockages from over-grooming. They also occasionally look like a little cloud grew ears and a nose.

Can you imagine if someone gave you a candy bar the length of your entire torso? And it wasn't just long, it was proportionally sized to its length? Because two things:

1) That would be so awesome, absolutely absurd, but in a 'childhood wish fulfillment' sort of way.

2) That's why you shouldn't give a bunny a whole carrot, because it's a torso-length candy bar for them, and that is just Too Much Candy for one meal. Instead, maybe try a slice of carrot as a Big Treat for Extremely Special Occasions, as that will be giving them the much more reasonable portion of an entire king-sized candy bar.
