Hitman Hunter Benowitz retired in order to live a peaceful life raising his kid, but those plans are shattered by their untimely deaths. Unw

this story is so weird and funny and cool and unlike anything else I've ever read or worked on.

tl;dr a retired hitman (who's a surprisingly chill guy) and his trans teenage daughter get isekai'd into the daughter's favorite video game, which takes place at a magical university situated in the middle of a lot of complex magical politicking. the daughter finds herself waking up as the chosen one, while her dad is now the tentacle-wielding university president/villainess of the game.

needless to say, shit gets zany real fast. and it only gets better as it goes on and you get to meet more of the sprawling cast--I can't even pretend to be neutral about them, Chione and Iphis are my absolute baby angels. and the story is a delight, a real slowburn in every possible way as characters and intrigue are rolled out in tiny little doses. also it's freaky in here; did I mention the tentacles? and the homoerotic vampire blood buddies?

I had no idea my friend was launching today, but after a year and a half of working on Rabbit Heart I'm so glad it's getting out in the world. she posted six chapters already to get you started, and there's waaaaay more to come. give it a look and leave a comment/like, maybe? 🥺

wrt selective editing = memory: i personally interpret scott cutting out pyro’s begging and whining as a character thing. in another series he would be into this, but as a 600+ year old vampire, its beneath notice because this is just how Everyone has always behaved (and Should be behaving) towards him.

crazy edit really. I agree with your interpretation. personally I think pyro’s just not blond enough for scott’s taste

notable as well imo is the fact that, during the scene where owen and shelby call out pyro for calling scott ‘sire,’ scott doesn’t actually push back on the idea that everyone should be calling him ‘sire’ (and in fact seems to be agreeing with it) until owen specifically contradicts it:

it’s a respect thing. but directly admitting it’s about respect is embarrassing, because saying you want to be respected implies you aren’t already, so scott cuts himself off and clarifies that pyro started doing this of his own volition and scott had nothing to do with it.

but scott does want the respect, not just from pyro but from everyone. when scott and owen had their little power struggle at the beacon in episode 1, scott got to turn pyro because he was the eldest, so owen (however reluctantly) deferred to his seniority and thus authority. when pyro, a new fledgling, turned shelby, scott decided it was an act of disrespect, a transgression. see also: scott repeatedly bemoaning the fact he no longer has a castle full of servants at his beck and call. scott talking about how he doesn’t do manual labour. scott saying people used to fear him so much they brought him tribute without his having to lift a finger. it’s a respect thing.

scott sees pyro as beneath him—he sees all the other vampires as beneath him, actually; even shelby, who he admitted to genuinely liking, he then compared to a pet dog instead of a friend—and the uneasy way owen has been going along with scott’s orders belies a further lack of respect. of course, pyro has called scott ‘sire’ multiple times before, including in the direct aftermath of his turning shelby:

here, again, owen contradicts scott’s assessment of the situation (pyro did something wrong, so scott starts hitting him until he physically can’t because pyro has turned into a bat and flown out of reach). and scott stops trying to hit pyro, although he does threaten him again, and is snippy throughout the rest of the conversation. there’s some tension here! scott didn’t directly turn owen, so he has no actual control over him, and owen is openly dismissing the more ‘traditional’ power structure that scott seemingly expects.

all of this, coupled with the fact that scott seems to be now claiming that he was in fact the one to turn shelby and cleo (which he wasn’t; pyro got both of them, although pyro hasn’t really been arguing with this shift in narrative—he’s mostly just accepted scott’s version of events, which is probably safest for him anyway), supports this interpretation as well. vampirism in this universe seems to operate within a strict hierarchy system, or at least it used to, in scott’s day; owen would theoretically be subordinate to scott by the rules scott’s used to, even if scott isn’t directly responsible for turning owen... but owen’s much younger, and scott’s been asleep for centuries, so times have changed. owen doesn’t want to defer to scott, and is increasingly vocal about this.

alternatively, it’s all bullshit and vampires don’t have so rigid a hierarchy system, it’s just scott being scott. he does love a good hierarchy as long as he comes out on top!
