“i didn’t realise it. til i saw you kneeling in the middle of the road, ready to die for me. you were going to die so i could live. and you wanted me to let you, like i let olson and baker and stebbins and parker and- and harkness and rank, and curley, even fucking barkovitch. i let them die so i could live. but pete, when i saw you kneeling there, i- it wasn’t the same. you have to believe me. that’s why it had to be you. that thing you said, way back, with the family and the trees and choosing love, it was fucking beautiful, and i wanted to, i fucking tried, but i couldn’t see it. i could only see you.”
