hello! i really really admire your blog and your devotion to the faith! i had a god encounter back in june and since then, have been trying to change my life to be a better daughter of God, but i've been struggling with modesty. as most of my clothes are quite short (especially since i live in a hot and humid country), i constantly have arguments with my parents about going out in shorts and such. i try my best to wear dresses to church, but sometimes if i'm going out with my friends, i'll wear-
- shorts and a t-shirt out. do you have any suggestions as to how to transition my wardrobe to something more modest? also, in school, a lot of jokes and such centre around sexual innuendos. is it wrong for me to take part in this 'banter', and if not, what should i do? how do i distance myself from something that is part of my school's culture and in daily conversations? thank you so much, God bless.
Hello!
Awwww thank you so much! I’m so happy for you!
If it weren’t so hot and humid, I’d recommend wearing leggings or tights under your shorts to make the length more modest and something looser on top to conceal shape. You could layer tops to make them less short, too. This is a good transition technique, but you’ll eventually have to get rid of the short clothes. Remember that we are doing this for the Lord.
Wear long, loose, and flowy clothing! It’s modest and will keep you cool in the heat and humidity. Generally, you should avoid layers and dark colors in the heat, but it’s hard to do this with short clothes. Layers make the lengths more modest, but then you melt. Try the flowy clothing.
I went through this in high school. Yes, as Christians, it is wrong for us to take part in such discussions:
2284 Scandal is an attitude or behavior which leads another to do evil. the person who gives scandal becomes his neighbor's tempter. He damages virtue and integrity; he may even draw his brother into spiritual death. Scandal is a grave offense if by deed or omission another is deliberately led into a grave offense.
“Let no evil speech proceed from your mouth; but that which is good, to the edification of faith, that it may administer grace to the hearers” (Ephesians 4:29 DRA1899).
When we end up in these situations, we should change the subject, excuse ourselves, or make it clear that we don’t talk like that when they ask us questions. Keep Ephesians 4:29 and this verse in mind:
“But Peter and the apostles answering, said: We ought to obey God, rather than men” (Acts 5:29 DRA1899).
We don’t get a break from being Christians. We must honor the Lord every moment of our lives. When we interact with others, we must reflect His light and be faithful to Him.
Are we reflecting the light of Christ and being faithful if we’re making inappropriate sexual jokes?
Find friends who don’t talk like that. Find a nice group of Christian friends at school so you can bond over your faith.
If you need anything else, let me know. I’m praying for you!
God bless!
