Congress and Obama pass law to eliminate outdated minority names in federal laws

President Barack Obama signed a bill into law Friday that eliminates the usage of outdated racial terms. The terms were long used in two section of the U.S. code to differentiate minority groups, and are generally regarded as disrespectful and offensive. “Oriental” and terms for Native Americans and African Americans have been removed.

Maybe this is just me like please tell me if i have he wrong opinion or if I'm uneducated here but I personally think the term african American is patronizing. Like, isn't that basically saying that they're from Africa? Not all darker skinned or in this case black folks are from Africa. I feel like that's still lumping people together when that shouldn't be the way it is. I know a very nice black woman who dislikes the term. She's from Canada and her parents are from South America... So I dunno. Maybe I'm getting too politically correct. Am I out of line? I'm not trying to be rude or anything.

hiiii what are your thoughts on terms like filipinx/latinx? Do u think they're unnecessary or? personally i think they're a bit useless since we have the terms filipina/latina and you can usually tell if the person speaking is talking about the male version or the group (idk if that makes sense??)

Personally, I always thought they were unnecessary. Because yes, as you said, we have the terms Filipina/Filipino and Latina/Latino to refer to the person you’re talking about. Efficiency of language and all that. 

But I’ve heard Tumblr saying that Filipinx/Latinx isn’t as gender exclusive and I’m just going “Does it have to be?” because we’ve always been referred to as the Filipino race without it referring to one gender or another. It’s like saying referring to our species as humans is gender exclusive because of the word “man” in human. 

Though if I did have to pick a term, I’m partial to Filipin@/Latin@ if only for the visual cleverness of it all. The @ sign combining a and o? That’s just a great visual pun, IMHO. (How *do* you pronounce that anyway? Latinks? Filipinks? Filipinat? Latinat?)

when speaking of racial diversity in theatre/film, is it appropriate to say "people of color"? or is that politically incorrect?
