The History of Nintendo: The Turning Point

Yesterday we looked at Nintendo's early games from the 1970s; today, me move into the early '80s with some of their most important early games. There are the ones that create many of their most well-known characters and begn the careers of a few of Nintendo's most famous employees!

1979: Radar Scope

Radar Scope was the very first game that Shigeru Miyamoto helped to develop. That alone should cement its importance to Nintendo's history, but it doesn't stop there. It was impressive in its gameplay and technology, using a third-person perspective in a three-dimensional space. It may not look like much today, but Radar Scope was an impressive feat back in the day. It was very popular in Japan, but had only modest success in the US. When all was said and done, Nintendo had quite a few leftover cabinets, and had to figure out what to do with them...

1980: Game & Watch

With Ball, Nintendo entered the realm of handheld gaming in a powerful way. Gunpei Yokoi was inspired by seeing a man on a train playing with his calculator, and used the idea to create miniature game consoles that used a liquid crystal display. The Game & Watch series was an incredible success: With over 40 million units sold, it's Nintendo's seventh most successful franchise. Not bad, G-Dubs. Not bad at all.

1981: Donkey Kong

Remember all of those leftover Radar Scope cabinets? Nintendo needed to figure out what to do with them, and set Shigeru Miyamoto to the task. A plan to licence Popeye characters fell through, so the young artist designed his own; a middle-aged handiman, a beautiful lady, and a stubborn ape.

The rest, as they say, is history. If Nintendo wasn't dedicated to video games before 1981, then they were now. The game launched the career of the medium's most respected designer, as well as two of their most iconic characters. I'll stop myself from going on too long talking about DK's influence and importance; most of you know that already. After all, it's the reason most of us are here.

1983: Mario Bros.

Jumpman (as he was called in Donkey Kong) was becoming something of a mascot for Nintendo, so it only made sense to make the eponymous star of a new game. He was renamed Mario and recast as a plumber, and given a twin brother named Luigi to use in multiplayer. Many aspects of Mario Bros., including pipes, coins, and turtles, would become staples in the series for years to come.

1984: Punch-Out!!

This is the title that started the beloved boxing franchise Punch-Out. Part fighting game, part puzzle game, and part rhythm game, many action games have taken queues from the green pugilist over the years. Fun fact: this cabinet actually required two monitors, with one displaying stats and results while the other had the actual fighting. Perhaps this and the multi-screen Game & Watches would later inspire products like the DS and Wii U?

This was also the debut project for composer Koji Kondo, who you may know as the composer for many games such as Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, and Star Fox 64.
